There are several members of the forum that can tell you everything you need to know about them. Scrapping these is pretty rare, so I doubt a thread exists to discuss them. If some members do not chime in shortly, I will go through my notes and provide names. Good luck.
You will have to be aware of the oil inside. It may or may not be contaminated with PCB's. There is also a considerable amount of copper, brass and iron inside. It can be done with small equipment, but be prepared to spend some time. I can't quite tell from the picture but often you can unbolt the top and remove the core (after you drain the oil) If you have to cut the can, I hope that you have your gas bottles full. There are some companies that only deal in scrapping transformers.
You can also think of it as a really big motor that is oil cooled.
Good luck.
The windings also can be aluminum. Check the nameplate closely, sometimes it tells you there. The nameplate will also tell you the age...I'm not sure when they started to be concerned with PCB's but I believe if it was built in the 1990's or newer you should be ok.
The issue of PCB in the oil is the biggest concern. Don't even consider buying it without a recent certificate of testing, no matter what age it is.
Sometimes these can be sold to people who buy and sell used transformers, rather than just scrapping it out. That is, better than scrap value!
Jon.
