Went into the Navy right out of high school on the west coast. Went into Nuclear Sub School in Groton, CT in the winter of '69. Got orders to a diesel boat from WWII. I told them no way so I got shipped all the way back to the west coast. Still an E1 at the time. Got sent down to the engine room. Then we took our first tour to Viet Nam. Sometime during that trip I got chosen to be a mess cook. No cooking involved, just peeling potatoes and washing dishes. The head cook liked my work and made me a real cook. Great duty, did that for almost two years until a dream job opened up. I became the ships photographer. Did that till I got out. Did a total of three trips to Viet Nam and some secret trip to Korea. They wouldn't tell us what we did but gave us the Korean Medal the same as those guys who fought in 1950.
Got home and went into the CB reserves for another few years as one of the unit's photographers. I think I put in 6 years total. I did a few odd jobs during the reserve time. Then moved up to Washington state and became a deputy sheriff, and yes I was the county crime photographer. Spent most of my time 4 wheelin around the back roads in my county.
