wire stripper with rollers

ok, i have seen a bunch of different wire strippers and most just use a blade positioned just right to slice the wire. but i have seen some use rollers that look like just flat rollers but they somehow split the wire. any idea how that happens? or if you need a certain type of rollers. i want to try and make a stripper but if i find a cheap one i might buy one.

It will only work on solid wire. It don't work with stranded

I bought this "dewiring" machine from Gov Liquidation about a year or so ago. I never got around to using it and, honestly, havent figured out how it works exactly. Thought you guys might want to take a look, as I'm posting it on CL to move it to someone that can use it locally. It was an interesting find as I think someone created it in a shop on some military base. I was tempted to take it apart, sell off the motor and turn the base into a welding table. Too many other important things got in the way of this project (how does that always happen???).

All machines are unsafe, it always depends on the user. Your machine looks cool, though.

If I understand correctly this machine is used to remove the wire from bales and turn it in to steel for recycling.

I started to make one like this using 2 solid 3 inch rods. I knurled one to grip so the wire would be grabbed and pulled into the crusher. As said above, it splits the jacket making easy stripping. One slot on the "stripinater" had a spot to feed whole Romex to split the outer jacket. The machine had springs that would allow the gap between the rollers to spread ( a safety to protect the cutter wheels on the other wire feed slots) and made this section less useful. I got side tracked and never finished making my own.

With motivation inspired by the video of Frank's stripping machine, I built my own a while back. I used the frame & rollers from a discarded treadmill. One of the rollers was already knurled which grips the insulated wire. I attached a Harbor Freight 1/2" drill to the motor shaft (as the treadmill motor used additional DC circuitry I did not care to keep). I also installed a Harbor Freight foot pedal to control the machine. It strips solid wire like crazy! I attached a TNT Tooling wire stripper to the top (powered by a Harbor Freight 3/8" drill & foot pedal) for stranded wire. Together they are quite the dynamic duo! Keep your fingers out the rollers!
