A govdeal auction for my state just finished. 45 Dell towers w/ no hard drives sold for $418.00! I know I'm not the sharpest pencil in the drawer but this is getting rediculous!

People have other outlets for computers besides scrap, some people can pay more because they are getting more. With the drop in prices today it's becoming really tuff to pay for computers if you plan on just using them for scrap.....I just lost a lot of my profit in the box I sent out today. It looks like I'm going to have a stack of computers/telecom in the garage for a while. It may be time to ebay some MBs.
Ya there are re-sellers who sell to schools, internet cafes, overseas, the senior citizen computer centers, etc.
Lately I have been amused by bidding up any auction within 30 miles to the exact scrap price I calculate. I haven't been winning much and I'm glad because I don't like to work for free. If'n I'm not getting it then they are paying more for it!
If I can get a decent computer setup for less than $50 I can flip it for $100 all day long...........Mainly high end p4 and dual cores are fairly cheap on govt surplus and sell for $100 on craigslist easily with a good operating system
Auctions that are open to the general public are a double edged sword. Good part is- any of us can get in on it.. bad part- Anyone without a brain can as well. I went to an auction a few years back.. hunting for some building materials to do my bathroom. I FIGURED I would be competing with General Contractors who will need to bid low to maintain a healthy profit margin.. Boy was I wrong. "Saturday-Casual-I-Got-Sucked-Into-The-Excitement-Of-An-Auction" idiots were out and were paying $14 a roll for R-13 Insulation you can get at Lowes for $9 bucks per. After a few "lots" of seeing this- I left the auction.. Ya Can't Outbid Stupid!
I'm so into scrapping.. When my Steel Toe Boots Wear out, I cut the Steel out of them and recycle the Toe!
Mowin, this is nothing new. For a gov. surpluss auction that is kind of cheap, less than 10.00ea. I do beleave that people are buying them to resell even if they have to use some for parts they can still make a profit. I also wonder if the biger e-waste buyers are buying them and sending the boards to thiere refiners.
