    Old Computer Software Programs

While yall are sorting through some of the old computer collection clean outs, you might also want to watch for things like these old computer software programs still packaged with documentation

Yea, you can sell old software as collectable but it depends on a lot of factors.

I found that if it's out of the shrink wrap, it's not worth anything.

What used to sell really well are old apple manuals and software. I once sold a lot of old apple dot matrix printer manuals on ebay for 60 bucks or so. And most of them were in "not so great" condition. People loved to collect this stuff.

Also keep an eye out for old AOL CD's in wrappers. Here is one that sold:

I think I hate you and I know I hate me. I have tossed far too much stuff. I contine to remind people to check the value of things before I throw them away. Well thanks to you two I'm having a crapy day. I think I tossed 10-15 of those aol packages. I may have some early Windows don't know if I save it or not. Seriously thanks for sharing, Mike.

I knew about the older operating systems but I can't even remember the number of AOL disks I've tossed.

    That's a shocker.

Check the policy on selling operating systems on Ebay, used to have to include a piece of hardware along with it so they wouldn't pull it. Not sure if that still applies, haven't listed any in awhile.

The AOL disk market has changed dramatically since the early 2000's. Used to be before people would buy large lots of the disks to get free internet time. After cable internet came out the market on AOL disks changed from internet usage to collectables. The best ones to see are anything shrink wrapped in a tin or if there is some character on it. I remember when the Harry Potter disks were hot items.

Here is a website that talk about this:

I honestly came across 3 of them (one in a tin) last week while picking laying on top of a box of old magazines, thought to myself "who would ever want these again?".

    I would now. lol

Yeah, a lot depends on the title. I have Microsoft Train Simulation on Ebay right now and it is up to $19.99 with 6 days left. That is only 11 years old though. Others just don't sell well even if they were popular in their day.

Most stuff for collector's need to be still in their plastic unless it is a rare game.

I would not toss them, you can make some money selling old software. The $500 for DOS must be a joke to be honest, there are other shrinkwrap copies of the same thing going for little on ebay. I think somebody found a case of them and made a fake auction to able to sell the other copies for a good price.

P.S. If you find old copies of Ultima series in box (PC DOS, Amiga, Atari ST, etc with the cloth maps and metal trinkets) they seem to always sell for a few bucks on ebay (not even shrinwrapped).

It no longer applies. MS has changed their TOS you can now no longer sell a OEM key unless you sell the entire computer.

Looked it up, because every now and then I run into this stuff, and I see it still being listed like this...apparently they haven't changed it for computers. Only the hardware should be specific to that software.

Printer or scanner software has to be sold with the printer or scanner from what I'm reading.

Original equipment manufacturer (OEM), bundled, or recovery software, is included with the purchase of new computer hardware. It is eBay policy that sellers can't list these types of software unless they are selling it with the original hardware.

To comply with eBay policy, OEM software must accompany the necessary hardware as described above, and the hardware must be specific and clearly stated in the listing.

    Restricted:

OEM, bundled, or recovery software may be listed only if it is included along with the original hardware, such as the motherboard, hard drive, or computer sold with the OEM software.

Utility software and drivers bundled with peripheral devices, such as a printer or scanner, may be listed only if it is included along with the original peripheral device.

    Not Allowed:

OEM, bundled, or recovery software being listed as a stand-alone item.

I've sold OS disk new in shrink wrap, and Office 97 disk (used) a number of times now on ebay with no issue. As for the AOL disk - (I'm hitting my head against my desk now). I just tossed out a dozen various disk in the trash that were still shrink wrapped. I have a bunch of old printer books and stuff I'll need to check on ebay now also.

What is really bad is years ago before I got into auctions, back into ebay, and scrapping I helped my father clean out his office. We filled up 1/2 of the roll-off container with old computer disk, books, equipment, etc. I think of all the money I tossed out then and just give myself a "Gibbs slap" as my kids would say.
