There is a large rooftop a/c unit being auctioned off near me on an online auction. I would have to remove it myself. The bid is at $1.00. (I've been busy, auction may be over at this point.)
What am I missing? Why are folks not bidding on this unit? Are there hidden perils of which I am not aware?

No my friend not silly but it is a huge beast! I have seen them broke down, just the coils can be 6 or 7 foot tall.
The units I have seen for auction are on the ground thus have been replaced already. I have even seen where the seller has a crane on site to load your trailer come the day of removal. But this unit and others like it require wide load heavy equipment type of moves. Not your average strapon and go deal.

You will need a huge heavy duty trailer to haul this, one like they use for heavy equipment because it will be that wide. DO IT!
Do you have any more information on it? Like the tonnage it's rated at and how far the crane reach would be? Crane reach would be the biggie. I've done some that were only 20 tons but took a 5000.00 dollar a day crane to get down because it was 400 feet from the front of the building.

Another thing is you maybe have to produce a certificate of liability/insurance. Even some require a license/permit to remove it. If you bid on it i would check with the area its in to see if other stuff is required.

I recently purchased a large exhaust fan that was still on the roof of a building. It only weighed 500 lbs but cost me $2,500 to remove it. Because I am going to use it myself, and it was never used while sitting on the roof I wanted to make sure it wasn't damaged during the removal, but still, it cost me that much to remove just 500 lbs. Imagine what it will cost to remove several tons if it is a large unit. Your talking about an all day event with people who are professionals and have experienced installing and removing these types of units.
