i have a ton of ups battery backups. i have been saving transformers and using a sawzall to cut off one end of the copper then the other part slides out easy then smash it with hammer to break away plastic and your left with a pile of shiny laquered copper with the yellow sticky tape between the windings. i was wondering if anyone knew of a faster way of cutting them. the sawzall works ok but even clamped down they vibrate very badly and i go though alot of blades.

If the end cap is welded on it is easier to use a hammer and chisel.

The amount required labor to pay off does not put me in the black so I don't do it. You could be finding other scrap during that time.

I'm guessing during the vibration that your breaking the blades, then go for a finer tooth blade.the sawzall works ok but even clamped down they vibrate very badly and i go though alot of blades.

Yes the amount of time invested vs return is very low. Just leave them on and sell whole **** thing as car battery category. Move on and save that time for other stuff that is more profitable for your business.

I use the same method as the OP described, except I use a bandsaw. That way the saw is doing the copper cutting while I am either removing the remaining copper from ones cut previously or working on something else.
