Battery back up nearly Hossed me!!!!

Don't take for granted that because batterys are swollen they still dont hold a charge. While tearing down some rack mount apc backups I recieved a good shock when pulling the wires off the battery terminals. This one had ten small lead acid batts that were all swollen in the housing. Not thinking they could still still have a charge I grabbed the red lead wire with my pliers and zappo....saw the flash before I felt the current. Pliers went across the shop and a mouthfull of expletives soon followed.
I grabbed the wire near the terminal and must have grabbed a bare part as well. **** things have been sitting for two weeks and took for granted they were all shot.

After I found my pliers and had a smoke i started to laugh. I realized I was leaning on a stack of these backups that were up to my waste as I was working on the top one, zipper on the metal housing. ALMOST HOSSED myself!!!!

Those rack mount ones must be vicious! Didn't Auminer break his ankle or something from one of those deciding to fall on him?

It wasn't just one battery backup. It was a server rack with 12 servers AND four battery backups in it. (story & pics here)

And I'm the Alexander Dumas that tried to hand truck the top-heavy SOB.

My foot still ain't the same. That foot was already 1/2 size smaller than the left... now it's a full size smaller.

AND, the darn battery backups tried to shock me during disassembly. Here's the story: http://www.scrapmetalforum.com/off-t...tml#post154903

It hurts when your ankle bends a server rack...

rack mount ones weigh a friggin TON...I have had several...most have about 6-8 regular APC batteries or if the slim line ones like 2 that fill the entire thing....pretty **** heavy...that is not even counting the steel casing for the rack mount...yeah if one falls on you, you are going to FEEL it....I get them from my hospital account...

I work on those all the time at work. I always just take a flathead and pop the lead off the battery just in case. Those batteries are all wired together, so if one has some charge it will go down the line
