Hello. We collect soft lead from Nortel, Avaya, etc. handsets from office phones. Many use lead for weight inside the handset. Usually around 4oz bars in each one. Would work good for smelting. Thanks

Most of the phones I get now have steel weights but I do come across lead weights in some older phones. Down here in Florida fishing is the thing to do and I used to get alot of lead from old fishing nets.

Talk to your local electric company. See if they thow away the hard lead coated wire that stuff is heavy. I have also found lead on the ouside of old light fixtures with the stain glass windows in a circle. Stainless steal door weights usually also have soft lead in them. battery cable ends also.

How clean of lead you looking for? There's only four reasons you're going to use it, so there are 4 different degrees you can get/pay for. Doesn't pay to use the good stuff for the cheap versions, and so on. And with A n a l California, is it legal to ship it in? I gotta look into that.

i dont care how dirty it is. i just hate wheel weights. My mold tunnels are pretty narrow and the wheel weights solidify too quick without flowing in the tunnels. I know for a fact it is legal to ship it into California as i have an uncle that is in the lead industry here. I cant buy from him cause his lead is all straight from the foundry, which is mostly spot price. i can only afford the scrap prices. If you have any pictures of how dirty it is that'd be great. i dont know if i can put an email address on here or not im just starting out on the site and dont know all the rules yet.

Another source of lead car batteries.
I do not know how safe it is.
How would you break down a lead acid battery to get the lead?

Very carefully. Actually, it's just not practical for the average person. What are you going to do with all that acid?
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

    Don't do it!

    http://www.lasc.us/Kelter_Cast_Bullet_Alloys2.pdf

    From the article:

Salvaged battery lead should be avoided at all costs. Since the advent of the maintenance free battery the lead content has been reduced and elements such as strontium, calcium and others have been added. Most of these elements cast very poorly, ruin a pot of good alloy they are blended with and are extremely toxic. The quantity and quality of lead from batteries is not worth the risk or the effort.
From "Linstrum" on the Castboolits forum - Maintenance free/low maintenance batteries use calcium metal-doped lead to catalyze the hydrogen gas. The lead alloy used in batteries also contains a bit of antimony and arsenic to help harden and strengthen the lead. When hydrogen comes in contact with arsenic and antimony, the hydrogen reacts to form ammonia analogues called arsine and stibine, AsH3 and SbH3. In World War One the Germans experimented with these as war gases. As such they were highly effective since they are deadly in amounts too small to easily detect.
Do yourself and everyone else in the vicinity a favor and DO NOT use batteries. Severe lung damage and even death could result. Sell the batteries to a recycler and let the professionals deal with the risks.

Old trolley lines are nice. Steel banding around a lead jacket and nice amount of copper in that!

I got quite a bit of Lead from under my house where they used it to pipe in gas in the 'old days'.
    Large tubing and fat joins.
I got hardly anything for it at the time, it was about 50cents a Kg..
The guy kept asking me "where I got it from" after a bit he was satisfied, "weird" I thought..

Later I find out that as its was 'Pre WWII' lead, it had low amounts of radioactivity in it and was worth a lot more to the scrapbuyer...
They use it around MRI machines etc.

Hmm, I do a quick search and find that its not all due to being 'pre war'. And it involves CPU chips and soldering and alpha particles making the chip make mistakes.
My Lead was made about 1905 or earlier.
What they really do want is pre 1800's lead, from sunken ships, keels and tradable lead ingots.
After it was made from a ore, the alpha particles that is in it decay, even with the small pre war amount of alpha, there's still alpha in it.
As the leads been made a long time ago, the alpha particles have decayed to a even lower level.

Now that's why certain lead is worth more, its old, real real old lead that they want.
Anybody know of a sunken boat pre 1800's with a Lead keel? We might have a deal......

If you know anyone who races go-karts, id ask them. When my Dad and I raced a few years ago, we used 5 lbs. weights to gain more weight for our race classes

I just wanted to toss my 2c in the ring on this old post. I did a cleanout at a stained glass studio. I got 100 lbs of the old used lead filler they use around all the glass panes. Even with the solder, my yard took it as clean lead. I guess lead is lead. It was a nice bonus.

Aside from mining the range for scrap lead scrap yards are a good start, you can also check with local plumbers and construction companies as they run across lead when replacing fixtures or tearing down old buildings.
