Where do you get your scrap from?

Hi,
So far I've been scrapping for 2 months, made close to $2200, all I've been doing is posting on Craigslist and have advertisements on my truck, where do you guys post to get scrap? Stop at businesses? Real estate? City zoning office? Schools?

Also what do you guys say to let's say a business to work with them to take care of their scrap?

I just don't wanna sound like an idiot when asking

Well do not take this the wrong way, but this is a public forum, people will not tell you what to say or do to get your scrap, but if you do some reading you will find all the answers to your questions.

If there is a local forum, try going there instead. I started just collecting scrap from our neighborhood.

Read the old threads and you will learn examples of where others have succeeded in finding scrap. With experience you will adjust your methods to fit your interests, abilities, equipment, etc.

Two great recommendations are: get business cards, and read the old threads. Mike

word of mouth

just let everyone u meet know that u collect scrap metal

if u have cards, just give them to those ppl & stores where they show an interest in you.
also, post ads on sites like craigslist etc

most of my stuff, i have gotten from friends & family.

only once did i pay for scrap & that time i paid equivalent of $25 & earned close too $300 from that store.

ive saw the best advice already listed above...one thing that realy helped me obtain e waste was hauling off tv sets for free....of course i have some limits...if all someone has is one tv and they are a bit to far from me..i will get there number and pick it up on a day when im going by there any how, that way im not out extra gas....i have got tons of stuff just by taking tv,s . once i get there i mention i take anything metal or electronic...alot of folks dont think what they have is worth anything to scrappers and they dont offer it up at first, because they think you may charge them..so make it clear you take anything and even name off a few things like phones, radios, and game consoles....phones and game consoles are the most common thing folks are usually amazed that i will take, they think they are all plastic alot of times
.cards with your name and number are great...i always carry a notepad/calender/datebook type thing and a pen and marker with me, nothing looses customers like missing a meeting...
being kind and polite goes a long way...i charge to haul off garbage, but if someone gives me a lot of good junk and i see a little garbage laying around i always offer to clean it up for them
i live in a small town and word of mouth seems to get me more stuf than anything else...if i think of anything else ill let you know

yah, happened to me too

i responded to an ad on freecycle
lady had some rubble to get rid of-they were doing some building at her place

i asked if she had any scrap metal- she said shes got two old garage doors

i went there the next day
while loading the doors, she said theres a basement that was used as an extra apartment-sort of
let out to university students

said i can have a look if i want anything there
JACKPOT!

two full loads that day
everything from steel to brass & copper.

she lives far away from me
she just came to my city cos the house they were renovating was in Durban

i still have her on my phone-just in case

If you are shopping at Curbco, check out your local bulk pick-up schedule (if your city has it). Then go hunting a couple of days before (too early and people might not have left the goods out, too late and another scrapper might take the gold).

Illegal dumping is a big issue here. When my regular contacts are running short on scrap, I go to areas I know are notorious for illegal dumping. Because these areas are typically in bad neighborhoods, I'm sure to bring my business partner with me. That way if someone starts any trouble I have another person with me. We also finish the job and get out of there twice as fast. I've picked up refrigerators, stoves, and computers at these illegal dump sites and it's doing a service to the community too.

auctions are a good way Auctionzip.com has been very good for me always bring a magnet it has helped me to identify things I would have never been able to identify as nonferrous just by sight alone it is an excellent lie detector happy bidding
