server question

G3 and even G4 HP Proliant servers are pretty much scrap. G4's might have some decent memory if they were upgraded at some point. If they are rack-mount blades 15 cents per pound is about max you would want to pay. If they are the huge towers, I would not go more than 10 cents per pound.

You have to tell the guy you need to see what is in it before a firm price...if missing say the cpu memory and hard drives....then not very much...cpuple of bucks for scrap after you factor in time. If that stuff is in there then $5-7 again depends on what all is in there. Check ebay though as alot of times if it has hot swap power supply then those sell for $20-30 many times. Same for brackets and other stuff from them.

the problem is everyone advertisies that they pay for computer scrap in america it seems.
this has set a precedence and now everyone thinks they have valuable e-waste instead of
what it really is, rubbish.
so if your ad' says we buy e-waste, then no matter what someone has, they'll assume they'll get something for it.
then you go and pick it up from them? probably drag things down stairs too?

the oppsoite happens here in australia, companies pay to have e-waste picked up, that's the precedence set,
you want a recycling service, you pay, so for smaller scrappers, they can offer free pick-up and can do ok too.

I just came back from two pick-up's, one had some servers,fat heavy old ones, maybe 80 pounds each,
I had a hard time with them as it was so akward trying to go down stairs with them, the staff were so happy they
finally got rid of them, there's no way I could justify paying for them, I spent 45 minutes on the job and am still sweating.

I think 5-7 is low for older servers. I think 10-15 is a little more reasonable. The board is worth more and heavier than a desktop. The memory is different also....

Not to mention the potential for copper heat sinks, the weight of the steel, multiple processors, ect...

Usually if an individual is selling a server they will want too much for even one with NO resale value. You are really better off getting them from a business or the Gov.
