    thin client breakdown

Before anybody says use the search button, I did and couldn't find anything.

I'm close to landing an E-waste client who happens to be one of the largest employers in the area. A good portion of their scrap computers are thin client models. I have one to breakdown in order to develop a price per unit for them, but was wondering if anyone else had done this. It would be helpful to verify my one breakdown with someone else.

Thank you for any help that you can give.

Nothing to them really except the board and power supply. I just did 140 of them not too long ago.

they have very little scrap value.........Usually small socket mboard.....laptop memory......small hd......etc.........only valuable if newer equipment......If you bought them by the pound you might be ok.........I would say $2 each would be a fair price if they are even worth that much

I would think they would have some resale value.

Not much in rhem usually. Personally I would only pay $1 each. If it has a good hard drive then $2 is fair. If it has a good stick of memory (1gb or better) which I doubt then maybe $2.50.

Always check on Ebay for resale.

I'm on my work PC right now and it's one of those small ones. Just checked the specs and it's got 4GBs of RAM. Dunno if that helps you or not.

Probably be sending some stuff your way when I land this. The thin client is a dual core.

    Old Dude,

Was hoping you would chime in with some experience.

I currently have 1. Hard drive removed. Has DVD drive. Has MB. Has pentium dual core 2.2 GHZ. Has laptop size memory sticks (1 is 1GB, can't figure out the other, it is Edge Memory 2GN592R08)

They should be worth more than scrap.........You will need the power adaptor to test them or a universal with the correct voltage............I am guessing they could be worth up to $50 each possibly more...........I wouldn't pay much more than scrap for them because they may be a hard sell

I was just offered a bunch of them for $2.50 each. I was given one sample which I broke down yesterday. Almost nothing to them. These are newer HP models, 0.5 lb motherboard with soldered on CPU, 0.2 lbs Al heatsinks, 1 GB DDR3 laptop RAM and the steel case. Nothing else to it. I will offer $1 each, not worth a penny more to me. I haven't looked into the resale value yet, but probably not much market for them.

If you are into the resale or want to be you need to do the research on the entire units and each of the componets. I will assume there is a COA on them and you have extra good HDD's around to install into the towers making them have more value.

The cleaning and testing of these units takes time but you may find it well worth your efforts. Only experience will tell the truth in your circumstances.

There are refurbers that may be interested in buying them from you and giving you a quick easy profit.

Making your offer low enough to ensure you will make a profit if all you do is scrap them is a smart way to go. Best of luck, Mike

just an update for everyone, I landed this client. first 2 loads had 12 total thin clients. HDDDs removed from all computers. First load, some had memory. 2nd load, only 1 stick of 512mb. All have dual core or core 2 duo cpus that are on PTS's buy list. About half are in the $7 to $8 range, the rest are $1. About 1/3 of these have DVD +RW SATA drives. Even if only half the CPUs and DVD drives work, I'm doing O.K.

Total E-waste for the first 2 loads are about 34 desktops, 12 thin clients, 23 flat screen monitors, 50 printers, 60 something docking stations (some of these have DVD +RW drives), 95 loose laptop batteries (about 13 brand new in the box), over 70 laptops and about 130 pounds of cords. Thin Client motherboards are fairly small, about 0.9 pounds a piece. I am paying for all this and think I'm doing pretty good.
