I just really use an old fashion 8 port KVM setup and keep a couple newer computers handy if I need to test some memory or daughter cards. I also have a dell precision T3500 with a hot swap hard drive slider in one of the front bays to do testing and wiping of SATA drives. If I have a need to test monitors, I just hook them up to my laptop, have one that has a vga and hdmi outlet. Any thing else that I can't test, I probably don't need to test, so it goes to scrap.
I have seen bigger, more custom set-ups for when you need speed in your testing, but for a little guy in the e-waste world, I pretty much have it all covered with this. Nothing too fancy at all. Hope this helps you a little.

Following up on this, I was wondering if it was possible to fashion a HDD tester/dock from an old external HDD. I have a couple of both SATA and IDE externals from which I have pulled drives. Could they be repurposed to operate as docks for testing?
Yes they can. You can also purchase for very little cables that have the ability to connect to IDE, SATA and the old laptop hard drives that I believe are also referred to as IDE. Check out eBay and Amazon. The other end of this type of cable is USB so its ready to work.Originally Posted by Breakage
Add to your list of very cheap items a tester for tower power supplies. Find a good tower power supply that has both IDE AND SATA power connectors. Attach the tester to that power supply and plug it in. Now all the out put connectors are live. You can now test hard drives, and optical drives.
