I was basically testing this tool out to see how well it worked for taking these IC chips and any other components off of the boards. It did pretty well, but I won't devalue the high grade boards again. I made the video in response to this thread. With a metal cutting blade, this tool can clean off a low grade board in a few seconds, even transformers.
There is a refiner on GRF that has a link to what he does with these IC Chips. Pretty interesting stuff. The link is in his signature and the pdf file is free.

I'm finding the soldered ones (with the legs) come off easily with a screwdriver if I attack the edges, but am having no luck with the ones that seem to be glued on. I haven't gone out looking for a wood chisel yet, but in the meantime was wondering if something else around the house would work, like a razor edge or a paint scraper, or some kind of art tool. My live-in MIL has an extensive craft room, and there might be something in there I can use.
Anything with a small thin edge. Hence why I use the chisel. I have a small wood handled wood tool, I know not the name of, but it works in a pinch for somethings. The metal part can snap tho if you apply to much force.
I'm a fan of the chisel, but I already had some as I do wood working also. An rest easy folks..the chisel I use for removing stuff isn't the same I use for my wood working. ;) I have good chisels for that, and the ones I use for removing IC's don't cost much. Course, I'm still using the same cheapie that came in my three pack when I got them. Fine ten bucks spent. Got 2 chisels for wood work stuff if needed, an a good scrap tool I didn't know I'd ever need. lol.

I use a flexible putty knife and a hammer.
Seems to work good for me.
