Has this ever happened to anyone else?

I ask this for guys who have pickups that they use to haul their scrap with. While unloading some old grills at the scrapyard recently, I accidentally shattered the rear window in the cab of my s10. I pulled up to the pile with my window intact, but at some point after loosening my tie down strap that held the grills together, the front-most one must have somehow shifted and hit the back window, taking out about a 2 inch chunk and shattering the remainder. I didn't see it until after the bed of the truck was empty. There's broken glass all over the ground near the pile, which can either be from unloading appliances or from other guys who had that happen to them. I have glass coverage through my insurance policy, so thankfully I didn't have to pay anything out of pocket. Has this happened to anyone else here?

i worked in an auto salvage yard for awhile. Had steel racks to put cars up on to drain fulids/pull parts/whatever. Also had a big Dodge panel van with our torch set in it. Backing down an alley one day I wasn't paying attention and BAM drove a corner right through the door window (while my boss was with me). I got a stern talkin' to about that one.

Yup many times, I bite the bullet and replace the window on my nickel. A sheet of plywood keep the wind and rain out until a donor is found.

I use a piece of 1" foam that covers my back glass, after i unload it goes into the bed of the truck and my side boards lay on top of it.

Maybe, but I am looking into building an easily-removable wooden box for the bed so the front plank of it should fulfill that need...

Could be a life saver. A sudden stop could send a piece of scrap right through you if you don't have a decent barrier between you and your load.

yep i did that twice on an old s-10 as a matter of fact ( it was from loading fourwheelers in the truck), after the second time i went to ace hardware an got a sheet of 3/8" lexan (plexi-glass) and put that in now if something hits it it may scratch it up but it doesnt shatter and cost me another 100 bucks at the pick a part.

Once after I had locked myself out of my car, I tried to get to the lock using a flat head screwdriver. I was very surprised when the window glass suddenly broke into a lot of tiny pieces - I was told by the insurance company (that paid for the repair since I hadn't broken it intentionally!) safety glass shatters if you touch metal to it with even a small amount of pressure. That was good to find out!

Pretty common for moving firewood too. It seems that the new guy in the group will be the one that tosses the wood with a little too much enthusiasm. My wife's uncle claimed that he had at least one broken in every truck he had ever owned. Between farming and wood cutting he was a high power abuser of his trucks.

Never had it happen but I watch out for breaking my windows. My one truck i made a wood box and put dog cage pannels along the back by the windows. And when i load it up. I put the tall flat stuff up against it so nothing can come threw. I aint ganna be able to see out the back anyway while its loaded.

Haven't broken any of my windows...but

I use to live at a "T" intersection. I was outside and this guy was coming to a stop. I hear glass breaking and look to see that his roto tiller had rolled forward and the engine guard smashed through the window.

Was a machine about like this. Guessing he had it in neutral.

Also guessing he didn't get the memo on these....

I know this is bound to happen to me
I have been looking for a back rack since i started scrapping, but have never even got a set of ladder racks
I dont want to buy one because i know one will turn up for free as soon as i do!

But a good one i use is a hood up against my cab, then wedge a door along each bed side/ wheel well. It holds nicely.
