Copper prices have been relatively high, said Jeremiah Watson, of Watson Recycling in Rochester, but are down this week, to $2.75 per pound, after hitting a high of $3.25 a pound earlier this year.

"It seems that it (the increase in scrapping) is really an increase in the number of people that are on drugs," Watson said. "A lot of the guys that come through, my personal belief would be that they are on meth."
Test me you friggin idiot. What an ass

It is plain predjudice to make such a remark as that. I am going to find an email address an explain how I feel about it. Maybe too much but it pisses me off. We make a great living recycling and all my stuff is bought and paid for. The honest way. Without dope of any kind. Yes stealing is wrong and noone should do it. Drugs are terrible and again NO ONE should use them. However there is no way 90% of us are on meth. Only buzz I catch is when I find a dumpster full of scrap even bigger buzz when its a dumpster full of towers or servers lol.
When you find an address, post it for everyone that feels offended to tell our side of the story. I think that might be why our yard requires us to show our ID at the pay window, they say it's not for tax purposes. People doing dope have guilty conscience so they don't really like to show their ID.

    From the article:
Ninety percent of people involved in scrapping use methamphetamine, Nelson estimates, and they often have warrants out for their arrest.
If he really believes what he is saying then he should park himself right at the scrap yard instead of the donut shop. I would have no problem with that and we would all be better off.
If it wasn't for the $ in $crap, it would just be.....

If 9 out of 10 of his customers are "meth heads" selling stolen property, isn't this guy admitting to buying stolen material?

ok. with the economy as bad as it is right now. very few decent jobs out there, rising fuel prices, rising food prices, vehicle insurance and so on, it is no wonder more and more people are turning to selling dope or prostitution to make the ends meet. Here we are a dedicated group of companies and or individuals that would rather work hard at scrapping, giving our blood sweat and tears and sometimes even some colorful language, keeping as much out of the landfills as we can/do, INSTEAD OF turning to crime. You would think they would applaud us. Instead they make broad and inaccurate statements such as this to give the entire industry a bad name.

Am I missing something here?? I mean, REALLY??!!!??

I am going on record right now. THANK YOU to my fellow scrappers that would rather work hard, Rather than turning to crime.

    Happy Scrappin !!!

Change a single word in the story, and it could be closer to accurate.............9 out of 10 scrap thieves are probably feeding a drug addiction.

Must have been a slow day for the person who wrote that story, news even bad news sells papers and lowly editors need to publish to get those paid advertisers exposure.

Personally I would ignore the publication its the editors reputation that is being tarnished and not mine. I take no offense to it, I'm part of the 10% that does not steal kitchen sinks and rip the walls open for copper wire.

I really hope that your officers were misquoted for this story.

9 out 10 use meth? Did he mean to say 90% of the thieves? That is after all what people that take other people's property are called. I have no doubt that there are many addicts that use scrap metal as a way to get their next fix but to smear the legitimate businessmen and women of this trade is beyond the pale.

It would only be right for your office to ask for a correction to be made if indeed your personnel were misquoted. If on the other hand, this article accurately reflects the opinions of you and your staff; then shame on you.

    Thats according to this article:
Copper prices, meth linked to recent uptick in scrapping thefts - Post Bulletin

Pretty broad and sweeping statement, more than likely made by an ignorant imbecile that has never scrapped anything in his life!
If nine out of ten of us were meth heads, we'd all be out hawking out computers at pawn shops for a quick fix instead of posting on this here forum....
