Thanks,
C&M in Dover NJ. if you have a large load of just plastic, they will even pay you a few cents a pound for just plastic, but because they have to truck it out of state, they dont pay much, and they want it in a gaylord ready to ship. you have to call ahead and negotiate a load of just plastic. also, They dont want you to throw loose plastic in your steel, but if there is plastic attached at less that 35%, they wont give you a hard time. Because they process enough white goods like fridges and hot water heaters with foam insulation, they have developed ways to handle that stuff. a steel yard might have an issue with waste, but a yard that accepts white goods is already established and able to handle the waste they end up with
examples like the plastic base on a BBQ grill, or the plastic wheels on the same grill, or the plastic outer shell on a computer case which is a steel frame on the inside... or the roller mechanism on a stripped printer once the plastic shell has been removed (its way too much work to clean a printer roller assembly. its all shred. Also, bicycles with the tires attached are ok, but they will deduct a couple of pounds for the tires on a dirt bike.
ive gotten to know the guys who grade my material, and ive gotten to know which ones will give me a hard time about plastic and which ones understand that they are set up to handle a certain percentage of waste or non metal recyclables. they have even factored it into their price. they have no minimums but their ferrous scale rounds to the nearest 20lbs, and at $0.085/lb for light iron this weekend, its not really worth the ride for less than a few hundred lbs of any steel
