What the fluff?

I don't know guys. When I take in a refrigerator they take the plastic shelving inserts. When I take in a car they take the tires, plastic, glass, etc. if I have a piece from one of those items left over I throw it in with my next load. Makes me feel like I am cheating but my reasoning is that they would have paid for it had I left it on the car/fridge/ etc last time.
When I take a car in I don't take the tires and glass off, right?
Anybody feel any different?

I've been taking mine in wayyy too clean, thinking more or less that "i'm not selling plastic" Buuuut, I think they've figured a bit more plastic into their prices, and are very likely paying me for plastic, whether it's got plastic or not. The load I'm working on now will have more, and I truly doubt a word will be said about it. I never taken a car in, but saw them in Nashville removing the tires from cars after they got it there, not sure what they do in OK.

I've got a headache.

I am sure with the shreaders and soarters out there they can seperate plastic from glass and fiber!

I find many things . I some times can find seats with steel and foam - but my favorite yard really does not want it - yet the other yard will take it - a wood table with metal legs vacs they wont penalize for wheels with tires, this yard approves certain items, as good items . I balance a load for each yards rules.
The fluff yard does not want a truck load of vacs alone , but have a washing machine a water
heater and other miscellaneous metals then the vacs are fine
--------
The higher payer yard I save more of the good stuff . As you see there is a big difference in per ton price . Knowing the stile of each yard allows me to have a broader scope of what i can sell .
It is clear to me the fluff excepting yard wants it all cause they compress it all in to cubes and sell it with massive amounts of other metals they sell .
Also another yard wants a tighter load even, but since they don't pay more no need to use them.
It's all good if you can get a customer for it .
-------------
The recent load with 425 fluff i reduced it to 200 by removing a wood table top (that compressed wood type) some windows took the glass out , But an old table with metal top and wood legs passed as did a computer table and 2 plastic lawn mowers.

my yard buys white goods. that said, they will pay for up to 35% contamination of plastic, foam, insulation rubber or otherwise when it comes to light iron or HMS.
they are willing to do this because they are a secondary site for a much larger scrap operation in NY, and they have their own shredders and balers and all that on their main site. They also have buyers for all their plastic, so they dont sweat it too much when there is plastic in their shred. They will deduct weight for wood and glass, but only if it looks like more than 10lbs of it.
It really depends on how the operation handles material if they worry about the fluff. my yard will buy it because they can sell it too.

I am sure one of the yards I use is doing this. I have seen when the steel pile is large they load it all into large shipping containers and then onto the trucks. They are not separating it there as they are small operation. So I would think that they are selling it to a larger yard where its separated. Have never been stopped when turning in any thing with plastic attached, vaca, dishwashers, fridges etc.

C&M in Dover NJ. if you have a large load of just plastic, they will even pay you a few cents a pound for just plastic, but because they have to truck it out of state, they dont pay much, and they want it in a gaylord ready to ship. you have to call ahead and negotiate a load of just plastic. also, They dont want you to throw loose plastic in your steel, but if there is plastic attached at less that 35%, they wont give you a hard time. Because they process enough white goods like fridges and hot water heaters with foam insulation, they have developed ways to handle that stuff. a steel yard might have an issue with waste, but a yard that accepts white goods is already established and able to handle the waste they end up with
examples like the plastic base on a BBQ grill, or the plastic wheels on the same grill, or the plastic outer shell on a computer case which is a steel frame on the inside... or the roller mechanism on a stripped printer once the plastic shell has been removed (its way too much work to clean a printer roller assembly. its all shred. Also, bicycles with the tires attached are ok, but they will deduct a couple of pounds for the tires on a dirt bike.
ive gotten to know the guys who grade my material, and ive gotten to know which ones will give me a hard time about plastic and which ones understand that they are set up to handle a certain percentage of waste or non metal recyclables. they have even factored it into their price. they have no minimums but their ferrous scale rounds to the nearest 20lbs, and at $0.085/lb for light iron this weekend, its not really worth the ride for less than a few hundred lbs of any steel

I guess the fluff yard by me uses the same 35% contamination of plastic, foam, insulation rubber .They do not have a shredder But I here they sell much of there product to NJ yards . I see plenty if not most of there salvage from people is less then 35% I am one of the exceptions as I analyze much of my stuff as I dismantle even saving screws , since at times I have seen a slow down at the curb finding , & and some worry from local authority as to if they want to bother me as i do my thing . I have come to a conclusion that any thing with metal is an asset that might not be up for grabs - infinite - so I want to make the most of what i find.
I bet the raw product with plastic wood glass rubber and so on by weight with fluff has more steel and other precious metals then ore mining operations.

clean car bodies are paid $30 more than shred here, the way it should be
i find thats its worth it completely strip the interior of most vehicles, because i can get $150 for the wiring harness thats under the carpet, some i just do a quick part out and almost leave the interior completely intact

So Fluff Means.. bascially non metal stuff... IE plastic,,, foam,,,,, rubber tubing and such... glass, wood...
and what you're doing is basically not putting to much of the items above into a load of steel... too much will doc the loads value.
so you're balancing it.. more steel .. less of the fluff but some to help dispose of it, where it gets gringded.. up and toss to the side.
and they scoop up the fluff.. and do what ever with it, maybe even mix it with the steel so they can get more for the steel..
so.. am I following right.?

for the most part, yes.
but still, every yard can be different. One here, you may need to go across the scale twice, to separate and weigh, "clean from unclean" (fluffystuffy) Another that is fair with me, just has a set price of 225 (<-todays price) across the scale as long as the load is approx 80-20 or so, metal to fluffystuffy.
So for me handling more computer and printer carcasses than anything else, I just leave the plastic, in or on, them all.
Now, when it gets to shred it is separated, anyway. So, they are getting "something" for the plastic, but they do NOT "mix it with the steel so they can get more for the steel."
Ok, imma gunna get back out and breakdown these skids of servers, and desktops, and fluffystuffy, schtuff, before I get toooo comfortable sitting here in my desk chair ;-)
Have a great day!!
