    Maiden Voyage (with pics)

My truck and trailer will be making their first maiden voyage together tomorrow. Truck has been used plenty of times, but this is the first load using the trailer. I could have packed more in, but I wanted to take it easy until I see how it tows. I took a quick test run tonight and she stops very well at 30-35 mph. I will be at 55 mph tops on the highway for a few miles then sideroads from there. This trailer only has brakes setup on the rear axle but I am considering doing the front as well. Sorry for the dark pics but I got home late tonight from work and did the best I could. Wish me luck!

Nice set up. Be careful with the trailer brakes. Have seen alot of rollovers and such because of faulty trailer brakes. How big are the axels? 3500 pound? Couldnt really tell from the pic.

Either way, nice set up! Hopefully that makes you a lot of money!

Roger that! I just rewired them. The previous owner had a 4 pin setup running no brakes at all! He was convinced that because his truck was a 3/4 ton he would be able to stop his load. I purchased a reputable brake controller as well and installed all new lighting. Safety first! Even the biggest load isnt worth squat if you dont make it to the yard. The axles are 3500 lbs each.

Good deal. I don't run with trailer brakes at all. Even on the bigger trailers. Just don't trust em.

Because they fail too often. Not worth the effort.

I'm gona tell you from experience here that trailer ought to good up to 3 tons of iron, with 8 ply tires. I presume the tires are 15". I've loaded my 18' car trailer, 3500 # axles also, to 4 tons with no trouble before.

Yes, 8 ply 15 inch. Brandee new with the stickers still on them. When I got the trailer, it had regular 15" passenger car tires. Those were the first thing to go. Im guessing I have around a ton on it now. Ill keep you guys posted!

Everything went well today, trailer pulled like a dream. The yard I use did me a real solid. They close the gates at 4:15 sharp, no exceptions. I didnt get out of work till 4 and got stuck in traffic a bit. Pulled in as the yard inspector was shutting the gate. He let me slide after a few words. I made sure to tip him well, lol. Total load of steel was 2080lbs. I left the cast alum, extruded and s.s. on the trailer for another time, probably close to 300lbs total (this goes to another section of the yard that closed down already). Trailer is already half full from pickups I made on the ride home. I did notice that I loaded the front of the trailer a little heavy, I will be sure to distribute the load more evenly for next time. Thanks to all for the tips and advice!

Congrats, looked like a lot of empty pockets in the load. Kind of hard to tell from the dark. What did you have in the trailer for that kind of weight? I get between 2500 and 3500 on a 16' similar trailer. And every nook and cranny on that sucker is stuffed. You must of had some dense stuff hiding in there.

Yep, a smaller fridge, 4 hot water heaters (decent size ones) two push mowers, lots of baseboard covers, some wrought iron, piping. Alot was packed up front. The bed had some stuff too, nothing crazy.
