stupid decision

I might have put my me nd my friends in a life/death situation last night. What happened was,,me nd my friends were walking around a hotel we parked at, out of town, and found 2 bigggg black compressor, 3 huge ac units, and some misc. stuff. I kept asking my friend if i can throw some stuff in his trunk and he kept sayin no, but i eventually talked him into letting me put one of the smaller black compressors (i think they were compressors, i know they were for a pool...) into the trunk of his car.
So we start driving, and after about 10 minutes my friend goes, "whats that really strong chlorine smell?" Evryones like idk, im thinkin it was this girl we just picked up, she said she just came from the pool. But then it started to get stronger, and my friend goes to pull over and as he is, i start to get really light headed like on the verge of being knocked out. We pull over, take the big-black-thing out, ditch it, and everything seems to be fine. Up to an hour or 2 after that, everyone else says they still have a wierd feeling in their throat.
I wasnt thinking at the time, but now im wondering, could it have been the freon inside the compressor? It was in his trunk for a while, but nothing happened until he startd to drive so i'm thinking when the car started moving and the thing in the back gets shaken around, thats when it started to release the gas.
He says we all could have died, and i believe him, but im not sure. I feel like a dumb-a** for putting peoples lives at sake for a few bucks, and i just want to know really happened. Any ideas?

Did you have permission to take the stuff? If not it was probably your conscience working on you
