The first load I paid for...

Well as I've mentioned and I am just getting started. Ive been unwilling to pay for anything as I get started - that's more my just personal strategy to avoid doing something dumb. Well Last night I met up with a guy who does old pc repairs and for $40 + $12 in my gas cost he let me empty his garage. I figured its a good time to learn escrap

I eyeballed everything and wanted to go lower, but said well I need to figure this out and hes a potential long term supplier.

Got home and sorted through stuff briefly.
12-15 motherboards
25 hard drives
6 full tower pcs I havent touched
8 laptops I have not touched - need to read the forums more on what to do with them
ABout 12 power supplies
15-20 sticks of RAM
10 processors
Oodles of cd\dvd drives
15 or so heat sinks....

So if I dont screw it up I should make a few bucks. Im glad Id read a few of your articles so I had at least a quick and dirty idea what to pay. Thoughts from folks? Oh and street sweeper I cant figure out why I cant send messages but where did you find 4/lb on motherboards around Hillsboro?

I usually test and sort PCs, looking of course, for "more than scrap" in either working and usable or vintage computers, or better than scrap or vintage parts. I'm fairly familiar with doing this as I've been working in computers for a number of years now. In your case, they came from someone who also works in computers, so it wouldn't be likely to find many working/usable computers there. That might save you the time necessary for the first step anyway

You might still find it worthwhile to check some of the laptops on Ebay to see what they might be going for

Actually he seperated the working and non working even. Yeah I am going to poke Ebay for the laptops. This is all old stuff so towers probably dont have value. I will focus on the laptops for that

Even older towers or the parts thereof can have some extra value as vintage, if you find the right types, and can find the right buyer, Ebay still seems to be the best place for that though

Or for Nostalgia. I found one of the first Pentium 4 Extreme additions. It has sentimental value as I worked on that project ....that was one hell of a sleepless 3 months....

yeah that too Gord, there was some guy in here not too long ago wanting to buy first run/company sample/field test? or some such CPUs, not sure if he ever registered or hung around or not

That is a nice score even if you scrap it all out and sell the boards and cpu's to a buyer here on the forum you will have a nice payday.

6 complete towers you already turned a profit from them at just scrap value.

6 x 10 on the low end $60 or 6x15 on the higher end $90

The rest is just gravy.

Thanks folks I am still at the "unconfident stage" on e-scrap. So I am still worrying a lot...lol But the average of $10 for a tower is what I have heard but I havent made that add up yet

Power Supply=$1
MB=$3-4
Case=$1
Harddrive=?
Memory=?
CPU=?

I'm still researching on Motherboards. Seems like selling to folks here Id eat too much in shipping to make up for the higher price with my small quantity. Memory and gold fingers from boards I definitely come out ahead for scrap buyers on here. Need to process the carcasses yet before I talk to them

I am going to keep a runny tally here of how I make out. Partly to help new folks and partly so folks can correct me as I go

Also still hunting through the forums if hard drives make more sense to seperate myself or not...

Ok this load is good. Taking all the steel, floppy drives, power supplies, fans Cd drives to a new yard by my work. I didn't like them on the phone but their rates on these are better than my normal yard. I expect this will cover my costs.

I hope the yard is paying more than steel price for the drives. Do you have a circuit board buyer by you? The hard drives you might want to pull the boards off and send to a buyer on the forum. Just ship the circuit boards and processors, fifty lb. box should cost less than 30.00.

Yep I started talking to ewasted about right way to prep and such. If I can figure shipping out hes the right way to go. Hard drives definitely will dismantle....but they are buried behind everything else....

I used EG metals in Hillsboro Oregon for CD\DVD drives, some steel, power supplies and fans. I was out of space and can get their at lunch so I figured I'd give them a shot. Steel prices competitive, fan prices competitve, drive prices competetive. Power supplies were not what I was quoted on the phone and were lowest around. Staff was helpful, but I am still peeved about about the power supply thing. I will probably use them when I just need to clear space as I can get there and back at my lunch hour, but not going to use them for my high dollar stuff in awhile until they earn my trust. I have no issues with low rates (well I do, but thats my choice to use or not) Just don't like the I never said that comment for rates on power supplies....
