mercury thermostats.

I tried to do the correct thing LIKE doing a search before posting but the term " mercury thermostats " yielded some great reading but no info .
The question is : i found a bunch of mercury thermostats so now what do i do with them - I think wile there might be value to them the hazard is the real concern

The mercury has value ro the right buyer BUT WHAT EVER YOU DO WITH THEM, don't break open the glass vial that it's in.

I have a few of them as well not sure of how to sell them. I could give them to the hosehold hazzardous waste but would like to find a way to sell them if I could.

I know my yard has a buyer for them as long as they aren't broken, just need to bribe someone for a contact.

My experience with mercury themometers, swithches, and thermostats is the value is in the elemental mercury. And my buyer would only buy it if you had 70 pounds or more. If so, he would pay $1.50 lb. Unless you have an abundance you may rethink even messing with the stuff. Mercury is an EPA and DOT regulated hazardous waste. If you have a household hazardous waste facility, i would say turn it over to them.

If you just have one or two, just throwing them in the household trash is what I would do. It/they would just make their way to the dump where thousands of other mercury thermostats from the past now reside. There is no law against it, and the mercury will be sequestered in the dump contamination barrier. If the future it will add to the elemental windfall when the dumps are finally mined as a richer source of resources than the depleted crust lodes.
