    just made me sick :(

so i was at my local scrap yard the other day turning in some of my own stuff, when 2 guys pull in to the scrap iron pile hauling a huge car trailer stacked( 2 x 3 x12 )that's not feet that's in broken dishwashers !!! as they are throwing them out i can see the copper in the motors on the bottoms of the machines ...and i think to myself do they not realize what they are throwing in to the shred pile ? or do they even care ? i so wish i could have ran into them before they got there , one day the gods of scrap will throw something like that in my lap, just thought i would share , keep on ripping and tearing guys......

I feel you dude most scrapers are UNEDUCATED to "more than scrap" and breaking scrap down, they only see a quick buck instead of taking the time necessary to earn that other dollar. I've seen cast iron motors from various gas powered machines in the shred pile... It makes you feel above the uneducated scrapper after learning and EARNING your degree from SMF. so I would like to thank SMF for giving me my "degree" lol

well it is hard work, I haven't had a day off in the 4 weeks at it, I'm walking around like an old man.
I did the c6 in my neck so my middle finger is numb and won't come good until I rest.

You should of thrown them a card or something and offered a price per unit to drop off at your place instead.
or maybe they had a place that they stack 'em up.

But I can imagine the pain watching good copper go to waste like that.
think that's how the scrap yards would make the bulk of their profit, when they melt it they get the copper anyway.

When I was managing a yard last summer there were times I had one of my guys out at the pile full time just pulling the catalytic converters, copper plumbing, wire and other goodies out of the scrap pile.
On another note, while all may be fair in love and war, all is not fair in scrap. Good call on not trying to cut a deal on the spot, as a manager and soon to be yard owner, I can't think of a better way to piss off the owner there unless its by hiding concrete in your next load of shred.

How about this one - A yard manager here told me about the guy who filled copper pipe with molten lead. Didn't figure it out till he was gone. Guy got banned from the yard.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

A friend related how he went to his yard on a rainy day expecting it to be easy to get in. He said it was the busiest he had ever seen it. He asked the guy why they were so busy and the answer was "we always get busy when it rains, these guys are here to sell us water".

I do recall someone posting here about taking in wet upholstered office furniture and getting the water premium.

To be fair, sometimes it might be a lack of knowledge rather than laziness.

    Buy from the yard

Locally here when I run into that, I have made an offer to the yard to buy out of the pile... Sometimes they will let me do so, but I also buy loss of PC scrap from them monthly too...

Yup taking in my steel and water today as well. When it rains every afternoon like clockwork you cant miss out. Instead of lead we had people doing concrete and glass inside copper pipes. to say the least nothing can be crimped closed anymore.

The stunt that got my goat the most was this...
I had gone out to check over the shred pile when I spotted a nice looking cat, it had strange elbows at both ends so it took me a bit to decide it was an empty shell which I threw back. Half an hour later one of my regular customers comes back from unloading and as my scale guy is paying him for his tin he says " oh, I almost forgot, I have a cat to sell you" and goes and pulls the same shell I had just thrown in the pile out. I decided to just watch a bit and see what happened, my you was having as much trouble as I did earlier deciding if there was any guts left in the thing, but as he was preparing to cut off one pipe to get a look inside it was quit obvious the customer fully intended to sell us our own cat. When I stepped up and mentioned that it came from our own pile the guy about crapped his pants, but being a sharp operator he quickly gained his composure and slapped me on the back, laughed and said " boy I really had you guys going with that one, good joke huh? I was going to tell you in a minute". After informing him that any further " jokes" of that nature would result in being blacklisted I told my guys to leave that shell in plain sight near the edge of the shred pile from then on and to immediately ban anyone caught taking it or attempting to sell it back to us. I'm proud to be able to say not a single other scrapper ever tried to swipe it. Just one bad Apple.

Diesel...if I caught anyone trying to pull a fast one like that at my yard they would receive a permanent timeout.

I have not been above telling my wife to get out and use the restroom before going back over the scales

and you know it goes both ways ,i expect to be treated fairly when i bring my stuff in, turn about is fair play , treat people with respect and you should get it back ,if i were cheated at my yard ,i would get it back somewhere down the line ... i just find it easier to be honest and upfront...

I was at the scrap yard a few months ago. A box truck pulls up next to me and the next thing i new complete towers come flying out. I stopped the 2 guys chucking them and saw they had 3 pallets worth. Told the guy right their ill pay him $5 a tower and that was at least double what he would get here. He though about it said yeah that sounds great, took my business card. I went back to the car to get my gloves and they start throwing them into the shread again. Guy tells me they get them all the time and he'll contact me when he gets more.

So then i waste 30 mins finding some one i can talk to about buying it from the shread. I even offered triple shred price or about 36 cents a pound and they would not let me. Said once it hits the ground the company owns it not even employees were allowed to pick things out.

And to this day the guy has never contacted me.
