Took advice from here and made a connection today

So i read a lot of post on here and one thing everyone keeps saying is..."just ask and the worst there gonna say is no"
Now i haven't really been focusing on computers to much, been on craigslist with an ad for about a month and was pretty much getting no calls, just a lot of spam.

Yesterday i emailed a computer shop in town and ask what they do with there e-waste, and wanted to know if they were interested in selling there old towers. Today when i checked my email, he replied back saying hes giving them away for free right now to and was interested in what i'm doing. we send emails back and forth for a couple hours and hes happy with my prices on everything.

Now i have a meeting with him Thursday and hes tell me he has a ton of old computers. i will be bring cash and a truck!
wish me luck guys and any advice on being professional for this meeting would be great!!!!

Again guys and girls u just cant understand how much this site has done for me. I've been a reader on this site for 6 months, and i'm so grateful that i have joined and now can share my experience's with everyone now! this site is a life changer. i now i'm a go getter.

Treat the meeting as an interview. I'm not saying wear a suit and tie but be presentable and be professional. I'm sure one of his concerns is liability. So think about that before you go in. Congrats on the possibilities.

He means, dont go in looking like a bum off the streets, talking slang, cursing, etc.

Most people do love cash, or you can do a check as well. If you do a check, be prepared for him to say that the product stays until the check clears.

You don't need a business ID, or anything like that. Most people just do it as themselves.

By liability, he is referring to liability insurance. This is good, because most people want to be assured that you are destroying all confidential data. The liablity insurance is in the event that you dont delete it correctly and some confidential information gets leaked, and you get sued, then it helps.

Don't let anything we say right now freak you out. Go talk to the gentlemen, see what he has exactly, explain your pricing on towers (complete vs incomplete) and see where it goes, then when your done there, go find another one!

i'm really impressed with this guys set-up, hes in his early 20's like me, but hes got a serious pc business going on.
well i came home with 15 towers, and 15 more on Monday!!!!yay

he cam off as more excited then me. he was def getting the point across that this wasnt a one time thing. so were going to be putting a schedule together for a visit every other week or something like that. Its a step in the right direction

    Good job, Ryan!

Sounds like you just made a potential long-term connection. Be sure to nurture it. Bring him doughnuts or something (a little treat) so that he always associates you with cash and other positive things. That way if a competitor comes along, maybe offers higher prices, he'll remember his loyalty to you and pass on them.

Great job Ryan remember to do as already stated, "nurture the relationship" and remember those that are in business know others in the business. Take care of him and he'll take care of you.

Looks like it will turn into more than just a hobby when the checks start comming in from all those boards and processors. Glade to hear your doing good, let us know what you get out of all those computers.

    Machinist,

Congratulations on your find. Your story is not only inspirational but motivating. I have to agree, this site is absolutely awesome and the founders, moderators, contributors and everyone else is commended for all the hard work I know it took to put this sort of site together. I joined the room you mentioned earlier for a couple reasons, one I wanted to understand some other intricate matters and two I saw it as a way to contribute financially to this awesome site. Of course I guess someone could just tell me how to put the site on my Christmas list and I could just write a check each year (I know read through the forum, the answer is in it somewhere, haha). Appreciate you sharing.

I wish I had this site when I first started scrapping 5 years ago. It's hard to get other scrappers to help out, it's like they thing your going to take their business or something. On this site everybody is in different areas of the state/country so everyone is more open to help each other out.

Ryan, if he's around your age then you already have something in common. keep a good healthy relationship. Not just the cash, appreciation, respect an donuts go along way. Once you have a strong relationship built see if he could refer you to other businesses like his. And if you ever come across people who could utilize your clients service refer them to him and tell them to mention your name. Bring this guy business and he will feel like he owes you one. Glad to hear its going well.
