What do you do, when you don't have time?

So, heres my dilemma. Between school, work, and trying to keep my g/f happy, I have no time for scrap. Which, wouldn't be too bad...except now my phone/email/facebook are blowing up...so I arrange once a week pick ups that have now left my garage unable to be entered, part of my neighbors garage stuffed, and the back of my truck loaded. I'm beginning to turn people away or tell them theres a pretty long time frame before I can get to them...which I HATE doing for obvious reasons. I know as soon as I get caught up i'll have nothing again...anybody every have this problem? What are some solutions you came up with?

I also have way to much stuff right now and keep on getting more. I have no space to put it and I am worrying about someone calling the city and complaining because my driveway is a mess and the patio is full along with the garage. It bothers me that I need to get it broke down and to the yard. Also dosnt help having to work 6 days in a row. If I call off of work one day i could make more off the scrap than going to work.

Everyone has to rearrange time to be able to do everything. Work and School are pretty much constants but you might have to tell the g/f you can't go out a night or two or she can come over and talk to you while you rearrange. I had to make a scrapyard trip recently on a Saturday and I had lots to do that day so I stayed up late on Friday night and loaded the truck and finished breaking down stuff, and then I got up super early so I could be there when the gates opened and be the first person through. I had been putting this trip off for a long time and eventually I just had to make time to get it done.

Sounds to me like you need to make scrapyard runs without breaking things down quite as much until you get caught back up. Yes, you will lose money, but you will regain your space and your sanity.

You need to scraprafice some time and get caught up. I would just do partial breakdowns and take some trips to your yard. Good luck.

Organize organize organize. I built this today for my non ferrous. The steel gets pitched into the trailer. The trailer saves me a ton of time I only need to make about avtrip every 2 or 3 weeks and she will hold 4,000 lbs. The non ferrous I chip away when I can and the bins go when they are full when I'm ready to make a run.

I work 40 to 70 hours a week. I'm married, this is why I don't sit there breaking every little thing down. Id be over run in a week. Motors sealed units transformers go as is. I'm not lazy, I just can't have my house looking like a junk yard. The wife and the city wouldn't have it

Well , I solved this problem by teaching my wife what and how to break stuff down. I work 50 to 70 hours a week now, so, she gets to have the fun job of scrapping. I have been begging her to trade places with me, but she is just having to much fun swinging that 4lb hand sledge.

I do slow up on grabbing new material when I have a pile. I am now full time at my job and get all the benefits of full time, but I am full time 30 which means I still have a good bit of time for my scrapping. I have managed to meld the 2 into a very nice package and I spend 30 on the real job and anywhere from 20 to 40 on the scrapping every week. The extra on the paycheck allows me to not have to spend as much time scrapping so I can be a little pickier about what I pick up.

Space is always an issue with me. Since I got my trailer, it has helped a bunch. It keeps the piles of steel smaller, but if I get a call for a load of computers that requires the trailer I have to make a decision to haul a half load to the yard (costly for me....33 mile round trip at 11 mpg) or unload an unsightly mess in my driveway for a day or two.

It all comes down to decisions that only you can make. I have been very slow lately on the computers after having a full month with more than I knew what to do with. I still have my ads running and no giant bites, but am taking advantage of the time to really go through some stuff and strip it right as well as make some good space in the garage. I know the loads will come back as there are a few on the line out there and before you know it that one good call comes in that requires the truck and trailor and all I can muster. I was able to strip and clean about 60 pounds af aluminum heatsinks that had been growing over the months and this weekend I can finally get to the 120 or so hard drives that have been building up and get them cleaned.

As far as the girl friend goes, that is a thing you have to face yourself. I myself would prefer a girl that I can scrap with and share in the fun, but that is just me. If scrapping is truely part of you and she can't let you alone to do it,.....well......

Russell, love the storage system. Are you sure on that 4,000 pound capacity? Looks kind of weak for that.

Orginazation and late nights. You should try to get your g/f interested in scrapping too if you enjoy it, just be sure and have her sign a non compete agreement, just in case things don't work out.

I will agree with getting the girlfriend involved, when i still had a girlfriend she would help me break down scrap and even drive a 2nd truck to the yard. She wasnt interested at first but she was in college and could make more in a weekend with me then at a part time job and we got to spend time together and had some extra cash.

Parrothead, I sincerely hope you mean the 4,000 lbs on the trailer, not on the storage rack! The storage rack is for non ferrous. Obviously the aluminum and lighter items on top. The trailer will hold 4,000; our biggest haul was 4,100 lbs (a lot of 4 drawer lateral file cabts and server racks) generally we'll haul 3,200 to 3,800. Last week was 2850 of steel but had another 700 in non ferrous.

I can show you the scale tix

I'd love it if my gf would help me. She used to strip degaussing cables for me, but then compained that her hands hurt after...she's only there for a handout when she needs money after i've done the work. Women.

I'm not a fan of pulling late nights or all nighters. I don't get much sleep as it is, and I don't like going to school half asleep or dead on my feet...i'm not a fan of working on peoples cars when I can barely function.

My neighbors kid usually helps me, he's content if I throw him $6 when he needs a pack of smokes, but he's slow and easily distracted. Also not good at cleaning up and sorting. Trying to teach him, and he's got the basics, but you need to constantly tell him to get to work.
