Aluminum Motors....YARRRRGGGG

One of the things I hate the most are aluminum winded motors. I got a huge (to me, about 40-50 lbs) pool motor from a friend today, and when he rang my doorbell and I saw that thing, I was excited. So we walk into the "lab" and I start dismantling it as we talk about life, cars, etc. After about 10-15 minutes of prying, whacking, and snipping I get the stator removed from the axle thing, and I start trying to get the windings out of it. I snip the wire and what do you know, its aluminum. Into the aluminum breakage it goes.

I feel your frustration. Tore up a Miller welder this weekend. Spent a couple hours and broke a band saw blade cutting out four pounds of al.

Yup. every pool motor i came across was alum windings. If its a "AC" motor not a "DC" it will be alum inside from what ive seen. check that on the motor before opening it and save your time. Or scratch the wire with a screw driver threw the air slats. Hope this helps

Thanks Greytruck. Very useful information. I still got two nice heavy pieces of cast aluminum from it, so I squeezed a little cash out of it.

AL motors are still wanted - 20 to .30 lb still not bad if you have many . AL motors not really worth dismantling
I find weighing them first will usually confirm which is AL or Copper / once you have a copper example of all size motors to go by you will quickly know the AL from CU .
