    Cockroaches, called Palmetto Bugs in the more genteel parts of the south, are certainly nasty and undesirable but you do have to admire their tenacity. Some species are little changed from their ancestors of 350 million years ago. The most remarkable thing is their speed...if you enlarge a cockroach to the size of an average person, they would be capable of clicking along at 200 miles per hour. So when you see those giant, slow-moving monster roaches in sci-fi movies, the reality would be much more frightening!

    The suggestions above are quite valid....I would only add that all of us have to be particularly careful when we pick up scrap in and around garden apartment type complexes, roaches are notorious opportunists and garden apartment units are easy for them to move between and infest.
