Roaches??????

I read a post a while back from someone who got a load from a curb alert or something like that. Said it was crawling with Roaches....

Well I just got a whole load and while heading back I see this HUGE mountain of trash, guessing from everything out there it was a clean out. It was crawling with roaches, every size roach including 100's of babies. NO WAY was I putting that stuff in my truck and I didn't bother hooking up the trailer so I couldn't take anything. However it's only about 3 min. from here.



Anyone have any ideas how I could get the goodies out of that pile without bringing home those nasty things?? Spray? Anything???

We do pickups from someone with a serious roach problem, I'm going to start taking a couple cents off each lb of roach contaminated things and bring industrial garbage bags and roach foggers.

I pick up anything that makes me money! There are computer towers and monitors (flat/old style), fans, radios, dvd/vcrs, about 50 metal pots/pans, small kitchen appliances, vacuums, huge stereo system, 4tvs, metal chairs/table, decorative metal stands... you name it it's there. There are mountains of clothes and furniture that I of course won't touch but I hate to leave all that other stuff behind. Garbage guy is a friend of mine and he tagged the pile so unless someone else beats me back to it, it'll be there.

Even if I took the big heavy bags with me, what do I do then? Sorry never dealt with roaches and don't want to either, but I do want that stuff.

Pass, roaches potentially carry over 30 diseases.

If you really want the stuff the "open" stuff should be ok. The problem will be the "closed" stuff (TV's.....). Wear gloves and if you want the "closed" make that a second load in a trailer. If you have access to a vacant lot let it set there for a few days (if you can) put a tarp over it and set off a fogger under it (make sure you keep the can away from anything flammable of you will burn the whole thing up)

you also could get eggs on you and take them home so i wouldn't touch it unless with suit disposable type n burn all of it when done

I would avoid it at all costs even more so if you are doing it out of your house. I know in the warehouse here there has been several times that I have went to repair an LCD monitor and its been filled with roaches. Those go strait to the recycle pile. not worth any time trying to fix or resale.

thats a good idea Rusty. Once, I picked up a microwave only to get it home and opened and it was full of them and some were still moving. It was on the floor of my garage and I FREAKED out! I jumped away swatting at my pants and gloves hoping I didnt have any on me to carry into the house and promptly grabbed my bug spray and sprayed everything down. What I used probably wasnt good on roaches but it made my brain feel better. I then threw the unfinished microwave into the back of my truck to take the next day. Dang but I freaked for HOURS afterwards.

Cockroaches, called Palmetto Bugs in the more genteel parts of the south, are certainly nasty and undesirable but you do have to admire their tenacity. Some species are little changed from their ancestors of 350 million years ago. The most remarkable thing is their speed...if you enlarge a cockroach to the size of an average person, they would be capable of clicking along at 200 miles per hour. So when you see those giant, slow-moving monster roaches in sci-fi movies, the reality would be much more frightening!

The suggestions above are quite valid....I would only add that all of us have to be particularly careful when we pick up scrap in and around garden apartment type complexes, roaches are notorious opportunists and garden apartment units are easy for them to move between and infest.

Actually I worry most about bed-bugs and since they can be picked up from airplanes, they can be anywhere!

Another reason to put stuff in the truck bed (NOTHING could survive in mine, NOTHING),
also take to the storage instead of home ever...Well Good luck!

I thought of an enclosed trailer with a large canister I can empty into the trailer while I drive.

They are just bugs. I thought scrappers were a bit more fearless

I have a number of Section 8 government rental houses which have to be cleaned after people move out. You get used to the bugs, but just like anything else use a little more care in handling. Fogger under the tarp is the way to go.

You guys are hilarious, after two months in Africa this spring I don't think there is a bug her I'm worried about anymore. Cockroaches, giant furry spiders, and disease infested mosquitoes in abundance

I'm not afraid of bugs, I just don't want to bring home nasty bugs that will multiply 10000s x over that I'll never be able to get rid of. That is just NASTY!!

Thanks for the suggestions!! I was just trying to see if there was a way I didn't have to leave that money behind, but the risk of being infested with something like that is just not worth it. I don't know what it looks like when they lay there eggs so I didn't even want to bring home the tables or other things that I could tell there wasn't anything crawling on. That pile was still there so no one else touched it either... I'm sure someone will come along that don't mind that needs the money.
