    the good old IKE

    Copper-nickel issues:
    Weight: 22.68 grams
Composition: Outer Layers of 75% copper, 25% nickel with a center layer of 100% copper

Would you rather hoard copper rounds or the good old IKE
wont any coin with at least a decent base metal composition be worth having
good base metals the IKE has - Notice no zinc
the IKE is mathematically balanced as it equals 2 half dollars or 4 quarters
I guess collecting coins is one of the better hobbies to have

The ike is only worth 20% of its face value in metal value. Pre 82 copper pennies are worth 230% of the face value in metal value. When you think about that it is correct because 100 pennies have the same face value as 1 ike so you get alot more copper per $1. Id go for pure copper or copper pennies would be the best. Thats is why people hoard them. Ikes are not worth hoarding for metal unless they have silver in them.

well it would take roughly 5 $1 ikes to equal $1 worth of metal so there you go, either way you look at it its a bad investment

Wile yes a bad investment - my connection is the copper rounds being sold for $1 to $3 per oz (also bad investment) so the ike might be better then those CU rounds and thus really shows the copper rounds not worth the bother . If I want a bad investment - the USA Ike is ok compared to the CU round - no sense I realize
I would like to have 100 ikes and that would be my horde , Pennies I work on & the zinc ones i am able to use as easy cash at the coin shop i get my silver rounds from @ $2 over they have a coin counter. So I buy $40 in pennies find the CU buy the silver .

your just trying to pick a better bad investment, lol

Well when you put it like that it takes 22 ikes to have 1 pound of copper, so the rounds at $16 for 1 pound is a better investment, even when you factor in the nickel in ikes the rounds are still a better option

you might want to rename your post the bad old IKE

Lot of (100) 1971-1978 Eisenhower Dollars - $100.00 Ike Dollars Price:
US $129.99 seems the going rate $5.65 Expedited Shipping
    --------------
    (100) 1oz Morgan Head Dollar Pure Copper Coins .999 Copper Bullion Rounds
Price: US $111.99 buy it now price free ship

    -----------------
CU rounds seems to be the better bad investment - unless the nickel is recaptured or if CU NI alloy has special use.

I cant call a IKE bad , Since I started sorting pennies I don't look at dates I drop em listen & go fast as you must know the zinc pennies have a dull sound when they hit a table compared to Copper.
the IKE sounds so nice you here the copper as you can with quarters and such . If one day base metals become to valuable / not like silver but just cost to much to make coins out of like pennies . then zinc will be next up & then all copper coins will be horded as Gresham's law will prevail
When a government compulsorily overvalues one type of money and undervalues another, the undervalued money will leave the country or disappear from circulation into hoards, while the overvalued money will flood into circulation." It is commonly stated as: "Bad money drives out good", but is more accurately stated: "Bad money drives out good if their exchange rate is set by law."
All our CU NI coins are still good we really just don't realize it yet. Sort of like a credit card
first your upset cause you have a $1,200.00 balance 3 years later the balance is $14,000.00
and you wish it was $1,200.00 cause .......................

One thing the IKE has over the CU rounds - is it is worth a $1 here and now and the purchase price is close , & if copper ever hits the roof Ike's will have more value from the CU NI content also

I cant agree with that you say atleast the ike will always be worth $1 well thats not true, if the usa defaults or inflation skyrockets whats it worth then. Id rather have the copper bullion or copper pennies. In the case of a default/currency change i can always melt down/ trade the pennies as copper. S&P is going to downgrade our country again in 2013 since our government cant come to terms. They need to cut government jobs instead of raising taxes. Its our socialist government and bureaucracy gridlock that is going to cause the default and restructuring of our currency. Also if your keeping track of the news, the imf just added 2 more currencies to its reserve currency holdings, the aussie dollar and the canadian loonie. The dollar is continuing to lose its status as a world reserve currency. When the restructuring of our country happens i want to be in metals, atleast on alloys 95% pure or better. Stick with your ikes and watch what happens as they hold there $1 face value , lol. $1 of a nonexistent currency is zero.

You stick with your ikes and ill stick with my copper pennies and bullion grade copper and we will see who comes out ahead.

I have CU in construction grade - yes - find free - yes - Now I do save - pennies - nickels - silver . If the monetary system falls apart . certainly there will be choice metals to have as a buffer against a zero value currency. But logically any coin with copper nickel will be of value to some one , that some one might melt down the coins illegally but if people are desperate all the back yard foundries will want coins that are copper and alloys in addition to pure metals. I see that ebay has a fever going on with a metal horde craze , and the IKE is fitting in, as i see a low of 129.00 to a high of 149.00 per 100 . If the Ike was made of zinc & chrome steel people would be buying them ? . There was an attempt in the Ike to quality , as i mention the weight is equal to lower value currency's mathematically correct . The Barbara Ann Dollar $1 is smaller then a quarter and thats not an accident . less metal !! Sure got a gold color . the weight is not there . People are hording nickels 75% CU 25% NI well the IKE is 75% CU 25% NI also . I am convinced any currency made of base metals will have value . And by all means acquiring the most for the least Money is desirable. But just having it is important .The day America does have to scrap it's currency as if it were base scrap metals will be a sad day for us all , after all how much metal is to much to have the thirst for metal can't be quenched.

What a whacked world we will have. Don't worry Joe will know just as we do - his life will depend on it , as will ours.
One thing we all can agree on is , what good will the paper money be if the s**t hits the fan.

Paper money will be great to pay off your fixed low interest house loan since inflation means your payments will be low in real buying power. I mean realy if the s*&t did hit the fan what would you rather be paying off something useful like a house with depreciated monopoly money or living in a honda with jars full of pennies because you cannot afford rent anymore?

Almost 11 full years since the original post and I'm still selling Ike dollars for $1.10 when I get them. Nope, won't ship them as the price for packaging and shipping would be prohibitive.

One thing about Ikes is that some people like them for poker chips. But I'm not a poker player. Just someone looking to make a quick buck when I can.

I picked up a 40% silver Ike a few years ago at a pawn shop that didn't deal in coins much so they didn't know it was silver. I paid 15 cents over face for it along with a few other nice condition clad Ikes. I didn't realize it was silver until I got home and looked at the coins closer. It is a proof one that cost $10.00 from the mint when made.

Only silver Ike I have found as they were only sold by the mint in sealed containers. Someone must of spent this one for a dollar and got it into circulation.

I like the Ikes as they are large coins. Not sure how many I have but it's in the hundreds. I still pick up a few now and then when I can get them for a dollar or a few cents or so over face.
