    free labor

I don't often have time to post a story on here but I found this to be kind of funny. I'm a member of a group with a guy who is an extreme environmentalist. He likes to find areas that need garbage cleanup in order to improve the appearance of the area. I joined the group because between my crazy work schedule and scrapping on the side I don't have much of a social life. So the funny part of the story is that whenever I go with him and however many other people are in the group for a park cleanup he instructs all the members to separate the metal from all the other garbage. It doesn't end up being a major score but it ends up being worth my while and I end up having my scrap metal workers working for free because now I don't have to go looking for the stuff. In addition, he'll send me an email when he finds a new location that's worth my while.

Yes, that is another positive outcome from doing this, and if someone asks why I scrap its for the following reasons: 1) its good for the environment, 2) I get some exersize and of course the money. But when all's said and done, its probably the money and the other 2 reasons are like positive side effects.

I figure that every item I scrap helps the world to be a better place.. for my kids, and their kids someday. The money is a nice bonus to the process, but I grew up in NY where we were mandated to curb-side recycle, and now I think of all the good we all do to help the planet!!

My son needs to earn some "social learning" hours doing community clean ups, volunteering at shelters etc. A year ago we went to clean up a stream with a local env group and found an old dump with a huge number of really old bottles. This turned into a bit of a history lesson for my son when we learned details about all the weird-shaped bottles and jars. Some went to my wife's painting studio as objects for their still life work. One bottle got sold on ebay.

Hot dang, what a cool idea. Offer some of my old bottles to art/painting places. Gonna have to work on that idea. Thanx for sharing. Have a great and Merry Christmas now, hear. lb
