To me, any adult sized bike is worth a little bit of time. A little bit of cleaning, and maybe a new inner tube is all that is needed in most cases. Then, depending on what it is worth, you can make a quick buck on CL. Even if it's a P.O.S. Walmart bike, you can sell them for $20-$25 minimum, around here. Sure beats the $2 or less you'd get at the yard. I just turned about $50 worth of investment on one bike into a $325 sale last Sunday.
Kid's bikes, I usually don't bother selling, though. They're a dime a dozen. I'll just strip off any aluminum bits, and chuck them in the shred pile. The only exception is if I find one that is in great shape (kid probably just "outgrew" it, I'd guess), then I'll give those away to kids in the neighborhood, or family, or whatever. I'd rather see a kid get a "new" bike than worry about the dollar or so that I would get for the scrap value.
Edited to add: I sort of went off on a tangent, there... Yeah, I don't touch any bike unless it is literally stacked in with other trash. If I have to stop and think about whether or not it's garbage, I just leave it.
