First FedEx claim

    First FedEx claim

    Hey gents,



    Sold a TV and DVD on ebay. I usually try to avoid selling monitors or TVs because it sucks to ship them. I've had good luck up until now. The TV ended up being pretty beat up but the DVD player made it. I wasn't in the 2 anything so I refunded the money and filed a claim with FedEx. From other posts it seems like there is a low success rate with claims so I'll let you guys know how mine goes.

    I have never had good luck try to claim something with fed ex.

    Yeah, this typically doesn't end well with FedEx. USPS (which I very rarely use anymore) is easy and always pays out based on what the eBay purchase price is. FedEx is a nightmare from my experience.

    first they(fedex, usps,ups, anybody) will want to see the shipping package, which will disqualify a large number of the claims. You didn't specify if the TV was a CRT(which I presume it was not), but if it was, you'll need to hope you had a minimum of 3" expanded foam packing on all sides ; ) I've never done an actual test to prove it, but most of my packing will allow the package to be dropped from above waist height onto a concrete slab without damaging the contents(excepting the few rare times long ago in shipping a CRT monitor, I took it to UPS and let Them package it ; )

    well the automatically include $100 insurance so you should be ok, assuming they pay it out

    Yeah Bear, it was a CRT. A small 13" and a DVD player. I'm only out the 23.00 shipping so I wasn't going to fight the buyer about payment. It will be interesting. I only have a 60.00 claim. I wonder how close they look at low amount claims. It's been a few days, I expect to hear from them next week.

    UPDATE..................

    I didn't hear anything from FedEx so I called this evening. They told me that my claim was approved an paid on Feb 7th (yesterday).

    Of course nothing is that easy. The person I spoke with said that the claim was paid to Ebay (I purchased the label through Ebay). I called Ebay to figure out how to get credited for the payment and they had never heard of this problem, the check always goes to the shipper who files the claim and there isn't even a procedure to credit someone. Good times, Good times.

    I'm going to call FedEx tomorrow with the hope that the person I spoke with tonight didn't know what they were talking about and the check is coming to me. This does have some interesting ramifications on Ebay sellers if the FedEx computer shows Ebay is the shipper (because they paid for the label) and claims are paid to Ebay.

    I could see this check showing up at Ebay and kind of falling in a "black hole", where noone knows anything about it.

    That is not true. They can credit anyone's account, for any reason that they wish to.

    I sold a laptop one time, and the buyer wouldn't pay, and each time I emailed him, he had another excuse why. So I contacted Ebay, as I didn't know what could be done. They cancelled the transaction and credited me back the final value fee.

    Yeah, they can credit you for ebay fees. The problem is that they don't deal with shipping. They just allow you to print the label through them (with a little bit of a discount). If you want to file a claim you need to do it with the carrier. When you file a claim you are paid from the carrier not ebay. They pretty much told me there is no system in place to handle this. I at least wanted to know what happens "if" they were sent the check, the supervisor didn't know because "this doesn't happen". I went around and around with ebay this evening about this.

    My hope is that if this was a problem, there had to be dozens of people that filed a claim and had the same problem. Because the Supervisor never heard of anyone else EVER having this problem I just hope the FedEx guy was wrong. I'm going to try to call tomorrow to get a different Rep at FedEx.

    I understand what you mean now.

    The shipper is not ebay though....every shipping company (usps, ups, etc) classifies a shipper by who is in the "from" category. Ebay is just the company who provides it, but is NOT the shipper. A shipper is the individual/company that packages and ships the merchandise.

    I am sure the FedEx guy was new, and didn't know what he was talking about. You be surprised on how often I come across newbies in the customer service industry who dont know their job, and then speak to someone else who suddenly has the "magic" to make it all happen.

    Okay Gents,

    Filed a claim with FedEx on Feb 2nd, received a check in the mail today for the full amount. It appears the rep I first spoke with didn't know what they were talking about, but I am pretty happy with the end result. It was a "no hassle" experience in general. Filed a claim online (uploading the necessary documents) and they paid the claim in 6 days, received 5 days later.

    FedEx will continue to receive my business.
