    Learned a valuable lesson

On Feb. 05, I had recieved a call from a guy from a sign company that was based out of Atlanta Georgia, he wanted me to remove some angel iron off of the top of a building that was located in Birmingham.
Well as I was talking to him, he was willing to pay me $400.00 plus what ever I got off of the metal that I removed, I thought it was a great deal, so I brought on one of my friends to help me on this job.
When arrived at the location, I found out that BlockBuster Video used to be there, I did not think anything of it, so we started the job, I started with taking some pictures of the job, from start to finish.
We stayed there during the night all the way to 2am in the morning, at that time we were alnost finished with it, but we got rained out for the night.
The next day, we got there early in the morning to finish up and a maroon car showed up in the parking lot, well I climbed down off of the roof to meet him and this guy was furious with me, he said that he was the owner of the property and that he wanted the angel iron left up there, well I told him who my contact was, so they could get thing ironed out so I can get out of there.
Just to make a long story short, I lost the huge load of angel iron, but still got paid the four hundred bucks, but it would be alot better if I had the metal to haul off.

best case scenario : the 400 dollar check dont bounce and you never hear another word from either party.

worst case scenario : the "owner" of the property drags both you and the sign company to court for damages to his property in the form of removing or dismantling the framework that would hold a sign or billboard.

this might have been an improvement made to the owners building by a tenant or this might have been a structure that was in place before local building codes were changed and it was "grandfathered" in as long as it was intact.

It sounds like you guys needed to work faster..............

On a more serious note, I would be under the impression that once the sign company hired you, you were working as an agent of the sign company. The sign company instructed you on what to do, had control over your work, and takes ALL responsibility for your actions.

If you had a general contractor building a house and they want to sub out some work, the contractor is still responsible for the quality of work and that it is completed properly. The contractor can go after the sub, but the homeowner that hired the contractor would only have recourse against the contractor, not the sub.

Hopefully you had something about the job in writing.

Legal 101. The principal is responsible for the agent's actions

I was working as an agent for the sign company, and the sign company had the contract from blockbusters, so it would be the sign company taking the heat from the property owner and the sign company would go after blockbuster for not reading the leases agreement fully

If it did, it would have gotten off the roof quicker.

One good thing that I got out of it was not only the cash, but I got two angle grinders(Ryobi) and a 100ft brand new extention cord as well
