Last night I had a major score (major for me, anyways) by asking somebody if I could grab something out of their trash.
I'm running my nightly route, and I see a crappy little kids bike and a weedeater setting on the curb. The homeowner was standing in her garage, cleaning out some stuff, and I stopped and asked if she cared if I grabbed the bike. She said that I could take whatever I wanted, and that she had a bunch of heavy stuff she wanted out of the garage. I helped her carry out a bunch of random junk to the curb, and for my troubles this is what I ended up with: the bike, weedeater, vacuum sweeper, a monster artificial christmas tree, 2 empty kegs, and 1 full keg of Bud (still had the seal on it).

Wednesday nights are usually my lamest nights, but my van ended up being so full last night, I could barely fit in the driver's seat.

Return the kegs for the deposit, much more than scrap, of course after making sure they are all empty.

Put the full keg on craigslist, they are about $140 at the liquor store plus tax. I think it would be a quick sale at $100. I would not return the keg for a $30 deposit.

Or just ice the keg down and get a pump style tap and have a party.

That full keg is going in my belly.
I'm definitely not going to scrap the empties... for one thing my yard won't take them. I'll at least get the deposit value back. Alternately, home brewers use them for cook kettles. Good money to be made, there.

The common misconception of those who do not indulge in curbside shopping is that trashpickers/dumpsterdivers are 1. mentally ill, 2. chemically dependent or 3. both.

We live in a very wasteful and arrogant world of consumerism. People tend to value things for a while and then to discard them, they wrongly decide something's worth by how much they paid for it.

Perversely, I tend to value most what cost me the least. lol.

Well said, and me too. I get the biggest kick out of finding something neat or useful in my curb-finds.

My grandparents on both sides of the family were penny-pinchers of the highest order, and I definitely inherited that gene. I can't stand wasting anything. It's not so bad that I'm a hoarder, but I am definitely not wasteful.

Interesting development on the draft beer: Last night at Curbco I found hoses and a fitting for a keg, and a really old Budweiser tap handle! Weird coincidence. I think the handle may be worth something on Ebay if I don't keep it for myself.

Crap, I need the coupler. I found hoses and fittings to a tap tower.

I'm going to buy one of those cheapy party pumps and throw a party.

Someday, I'll turn a fridge into a proper kegerator. Simple dreams

I hope after all this time it is not skunky beer, that would be disappointing.

I've recently started scrapping semi serious because my full time job isn't paying enough. At first I didn't stop if people were outside mostly because of my own original embarrassment. Now I really don't care and step out the care asking them how they're doing. It seems normally they just let me know that whatever I'm picking up doesn't work and I'll tell them I'm scrapping it anyway. I haven't gotten any big scores out of it but I've picked up a few small things here and there that they wanted to part with.

I don't worry much about the stink eye from people that don't have to worry about paying my bills.

Its common in the computer collecting hobby to put stuff up super cheap but above what a scrapper would pay just to keep the items from getting recycled. You would be surprised how many collectors end up having to move short notice (or evicted) and want their items (some worth quite a bit) to go to another collector and not into a scrappers hand where they will be destroyed. People used to post them for FREE but then you know it will be scrapped. Eventually some of the junk will end up getting scrapped, but the nicer items will find a new home. Don't take it personally, it has nothing to do with you or your making an honest living.
