First time scrapping and I love it!

So, I live in southern missouri, the nearest scrap yard is 60 mins/miles away. Me and my room mate have been talking about getting a load for a long while since his grandfather owns a now ran down old furniture store (its caved in, been looted already by scrappers illegally..) but theres still a bunch of junk on a hill side. We finally got permission tot ake a trailer load, we used my truck and a couple ropes to tug washers and driers up the hill (Old ones from the 60s and 70s when they were actually heavy) and some fridges too! We borrowed a 16 foot trailer and loaded her down. Hauled her off and made 255, 200 after gas, that means 100 a piece for each of us for about 6 hours of work! Im up for it again, theres so much more stuff to pick too, another few loads. I kind of want to even get my own trailer, I figure I might save my half and do that. Iv also been breaking down items, electric motors, I have a couple buckets full of copper wiring I plan on taking on our next load. We have to load it down heavy though to make it worth while for us. We had 2300 last load, we hope to get 3000+ this time. Does anyone have any suggestions or anything for new scrappers like us? The motors in these washers and dryers are not copper, iv done checked that, and the scrap yard only gives breakage price which is the same as tin and iron so I figure I might as well leave it all together. Iv learned a lot already from this place, just by reading the threads on here!

Not necessarily in order...Work hard, have a sense of urgency, use common sense and keep reading the old threads.

Edit-Sorry, forgot to say nice work on the first load.

Yeah, im already wanting to get a trailer. My biggest issue is keeping myself motivated. I have a day job and im not going to give it up by no means. There used to be this one thief who came through the grocery store I work at and he was always shop lifting but in between those sessions he would be asking everyone for scrap, begging and pleading, using the old.. I need it to feed my kids crap. That sickens me, that guy is a total lazy turd. Anyhow, It is addicting indeed! I think I may have to get some bed caps for my dodge though, iv already scratched up her paint some from putting things in the bed, meh.. Just a truck! Hah.

Don't get wrong, there is a profit motivation for me.

But my much bigger motivation is my 6 year old daughter. She's at that age where she's learning about recycling, and planting trees, and stuff like that. Now I can't throw a piece of plastic or paper away without her giving me a dirty look and moving it to the recyclables. Plus we planted the first garden I've been involved with since I was a kid the past year. I'm ordering some fruit trees from the local conservation district tree sale this spring. It dawned on me that I didn't have any at the house, and every kid should be able to go out and pick a fresh apple or pear when they want to.

Every pound we keep out of the landfills makes a difference.

Now that's priceless. My 9 year old can identity number 1 and 2 coppers, alu and more and it also makes me proud.

very nice load. A trailer and truck are going to be the first big investment I make, but that's down the road. Keep up the good work.

Yeah that was from the "honey hole" Its about tapped out though. There are still several washers, dryers, and fridges in the hill side but it will take a excavator to pull them out. Hopefully we can find somewhere else. Theres several places along the highway here that are just full of metal junk so, time to get the word out. lol
