UPDATE:
Hey everyone, I know it has been a while since I been on. I mainly been away due to being sick and then being busy with jobs as well.
Anyway, as I told you all, I was finally able to meet up with the guy. After talking with him, and a few other people about the deal, I decided that even though my company would be looking at making over $18,000 I wouldn't see anything close to that, and that practically all the profits would be going to the guy and his family, when I be doing all the loading, sorting, breaking down, transporting, tools, etc.
The guy told me the property was roughly 30 miles away, and that I MUST make multiple trips a day or no deal (well that is not always an easy thing to do, since there is multiple variables into play with each load). I also asked him if they would be ok if I got it set up to have roll offs dropped off (was able to great some great pricing), and the guy refused. Said I must haul it all myself (My trailer can only hold 3,500 lbs at a time, and the car trailer can hold mainly 10,000), and we were talking over 500,000lbs of scrap metal.
Also, I was going to try and negotiate a 60/40 split, since again I and my team would be doing it all, which to me is more than fair, but they were very adamant about 50/50 or no deal.
Also, the numbers that I had for the guy, kept coming back as invalid. I know the guy is real, and I am sure the whole deal was genuine, and I really didn't want to miss out on an opportunity like that, but after figuring up everything, I realized that it was not worth all the headache it was going to cause me in the long run.
I even talked with my family and some close friends about it, and they all pretty much agreed with me.
Aside from this deal, I have been under the weather a little bit. I had some heart/chest issues. After researching online, and talking with a few doctors, they determined that I must have pulled something that was causing me some slight discomfort when I was breathing. They told me to take it easy for a little while and rest, but if it continued or got worse, or went away and came back, to come back in for some different tests.
So far so good.
Aside from that, like I said, I have just been busy. Got a couple new local buyers for stuff that I will be coming across doing pickups, as well as a few new clients that look to be good repeat customers.
See you guys around. Thanks for the thoughts and concerns as well.

Glad you are feeling better but sorry to hear that big deal didn't go through. Sounds like your business is going good.
I to was wondering why I hadn't seen a post from Geo in awhile, now I know why!
Thanks for the update bud, and glad your ok. Those pulled muscles can be a bastard to deal with. I speak from experience..I've pulled muscles many times in my upper core, and it isn't fun. Do as the docs say and don't cheat! Daily stretches will help sort you out and mend faster to. I learned that last time I eff'd up my back so bad, the doc had me in rehab/PT for 4 months. Not fun at all.
Again glad ya feeling better and good to know you been busy! Sucks the deal fell through tho.

i had one of those cleanup jobs last dec/jan borrowed a bobcat and sat in it for almost two months straight. 172 tons later... my wife was out of maternity leave and i was back on kid duty. @20% i was making bank, had one of my local yards bring the roll off's and it was atleast 4 a day, they basicly dedicated a truck just to haul for me, and since they came out and looked at the jobsite to see what was going to come in they covered all the hauling. which free'd up alot of time for me to load and sort. i'd call them back and let them know that with the roll offs it would work for you to do a 70/30 split or a flat daily rate for you to be there.
Thanks for the update on how many chickens hatched.

Yeah...when a door closes, atleast 1 always opens. So cant really complain.
Yeah I was taking it very easy for a while. While doing that, I slowly re entered re investing, and about to break into that again. Still setting up my team of people, but so far things with that are going pretty good as well.
If the dude and his family were more cooperative with me, it would have been done (atleast a lot of it), but you can only do so much before you just have to say that you gave it all you could. I unfortunately cannot dedicate that much time to one single job and leave other clients hanging out in the wind.
Plus, I am not about to do everything myself for a 50/50 cut. If the roles were reversed, I wouldnt expect 50% profit when someone else is doing all the work.
Not at all happy with it, but thats life.
I actually kinda missed u George

Hey George glad your feeling better. Sorry about the motherload not working out but there is always one lurking somewhere. I dont blame you for walking away. The guy should have been happy with a 60/40 split but some people you just can not talk too.

Thanks Mike. I missed you all as well.
It's alright. I actually was beating myself up over it a lot, because I couldn't swallow walking away from potential gross profits of $18,000+ but in the end, I am glad that I did it.
This guy even told me about him hiring others and how crappy they were. I guaranteed him that it would all be done as quick as possible and told him the best way I could make it happen. In the end, it just wasn't good enough for him.
Glad to hear you're feeling better. On this deal, I wouldn't be shocked to have him call you back and accept your offer, especially since they've previously already had bad experiences with others. Now that they've spoken with an actual professional scrapper, that'll put the "let's get rid of this JUNK and get $$ for it!!" bug in their ear. That can be the necessary motivation for some people.
While that's very true, those are probably the type of person the customer had bad results/experiences with before. Those who bite off more than they can chew, eg. they can't afford buying or renting trucks or trailers or even repair what they have when something major breaks. Then, they can't deliver on what they've overpromised, such as having everything hauled by a certain date, or hauling "x" number of loads per day.
glad your feeling better

You would think, but unfortunately not always the case. It's like I tell people...I can only offer what I can offer. Its up to them to accept or decline. But I know what I can and cannot do and at what cost. As long as my bills are paid, kids and wife are taken care of, and I am making a little money that is all good, but I am not going to bust my back/butt for pennies either.
There is a TON of them around here now, that have this unfortunate mentality. Like I have said a few times over the last 2 or so years. At first, I did free metal pickups, and after almost a year, realized I was barely, and I mean BARELY making a profit. Now that I charge enough to at least cover gas, I see the $$$ a lot more.
One of the people he said, was just an average guy with a truck, who would get 1 load, and then take the rest of the day off.
Another group of guys, from Maryland, brought in some heavy duty machines, took all the "big" stuff, and left one of their big machines for over a month, until it pissed him off, and he called them and told them he now owned it (in VA if something is left behind for more than 30 days, by law you own it)
Thanks, me too!
Been spending the week with my family. Spring Break all this week so we been hitting up our community center's indoor pool.
My 6 year old is breaking a real pro at swimming. Her lessons start next month. Her, her sister, and my wifes 2 younger brothers and sister are all signed up for summer camp classes. Stuff that they love doing, and with our $99/month family membership, it is all free.
