Cool How do people treat you knowing you are a "scrapper?"

I wonder if you guys get the same. I will meet someone, eventually convo turns to what do you do. I own my own business, then always WOW! what do you do? I answer, I recycle Cars (which is my main focus). Then always the .....ohhh...so you pick up scrap? LOL! Seriously, as scrappers we can make as much as a lawyer...even more! So why the stigma attached to us? Is it just everyone makes a stereo type of us? We can (in a good week, make more than they can in 6 weeks!). Do you get this kind of silly behavior?
Now my buds, they know and they think it is cool, and they always ask me...what did you make this weekend? then they laugh at me and we go back to work at my casino. Other people are just pricks!! I'd like to say...yea you with your little new car and 14 credit cards...I got it made. I say nothing and smile and walk away.. Ha ha. Do you guys encounter this too?

You're welcome. What people think is of no concern to me (maybe they should be concerned with what I think of THEM?).
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

here and there I get people making remarks when I go out to scrap. My friends think it is cool cause I really need the extra money. I do have a full time job, but once offered vto or if I want to stay til shift end, I bail to go scrap.

Yeah. I have to agree with Mick's quote also! That is it!! LOL! He's got the key!! and yes I also agree, who cares what I do? I feed my kids, I get spending cash...and I have a good time! and no, I don't let them ever get to me. ha ha, I make more money than them...so I don't care! Hey, this is a cool site!! have a good one and happy scrapping! Merry Christmas! Oh and Mick, if half the people out there knew what I really thought of them...they wouldn't think I was so nice!!

I'm sure the owner of the scrap yard I go to doesnt care. He's makking a fortune this year. He had a cadillac with the lic plate scrpman. The other day I was there and he is driving a brnd new Bentley with the lic plate SCRP MNY. The guy just drives around on his decked out golf cart with his dog surveying his kingdom. God Bless him. It's good to be king.

Let them continue thinking that. The less competition we all have, the better.

A lot of people here in South East GA have accepted the profession.... But those that don't understand find it interesting that my net income is higher than theirs most weeks.

I do pretty darn good in the spring-fall season.. but this past fall I was offered some side work with the scrap yard I deal with... i take apart industrial electrical panels he has in his yard.... most people are ok with what I do, some people think I am weird... I bought myself a used 10x20 carport tent for storage... but in the end, I am making good money for an hour or 2 of work in the shop after I eat dinner

Let them think what they want. I keep a clean truck and a professional manner. At the very least, scrapping allows me to bring my dog to work with me. I'm too busy trying to keep my truckbed full to really worry about people's perceptions. A scrapper with a thousand bucks and a surgeon with a thousand bucks are just a couple of guys with the same $1000.

    Hmmmmmm!!!

Well what has happened more often than not ,I get that same person who scoffed earlier coming up later talking about possibly doing the same thing.usually because they've seen Scrappers on Tv or they tried one day and got a good payout.I just smile and say call me to help you when you go

I've had people stare at me like I was an Alien. About a month ago, I was looking in this dumpster in an apartment complex, a lady comes out of her apartment, grabs a bag of trash from the dumpster I was looking in, and went back into her apartment. I mean come on now!

HAHAHA!!! she probably saw one of those "how people steal your identity" shows. Some TV kills Common sense cells as well as brain cells.I would've laughed and said Im only here for scrap metal.
I once had the cops called on me as a possible terrorist because i had my old "Kidnapper van ",as my friends like to call it,parked next to the dumpster i was checking.Luckily the security guard showed up first and found what i was there for and told me to just leave before the cops showed up.He would explain.Anyone else deal with that?

I live in a small town. Every small town has to have a "crazy lady" ! For many years ours was a "cat lady" who lived in a big house and had hundreds of cats. She died about 5 years ago. Well, SOMEBODY had to take her place!! But do you think I give a rat's (or cat's)___ !?? I'm with Mick on that, too. Sticks and stones.....
