Is this petty of me

My yard as I have mentioned has become very strict. And now I see different deductions have always been applied based on the overall weight of your load - for fridges (due to insulation ) dishwasher (due to plastic body) Metal doors with foam inside , VCR's , Other stuff ...
Now I don't mind the deductions as thats fare BUT I see that the weight reduction has been actually unfair, but for a wile I was not catching on
say i bring them a dishwasher that weighs 50 pounds well they took off 45 - A 40 pound door took off 40 . Now I see that since i have been including these items with my normal load I was actually getting ZERO pay . I questioned the situation and was told you need to weigh those items separate if you don't want a yard man reduction . I said your on the spot reductions caused those items to be ZERO . His answer: weigh separate . Well I know when not to continue the debate as I will not win. Any way what a pain , like what do I have to do now weight one 50 pound washer to get my official .5 or .6 per LB
The reason I see it has all along been sneaky is if i bring in a small load comprising of these items then i see no deductions are made as clearly they do want the stuff but there is no juicy weight to hide the deductions.
Am I wrong to think they should make honest on the spot reductions even I have gotten to a point i can pick up a item and know the weight by feel The yards must know the weight of all items backwards and forwards
You may ask how come I finally discovered this, It's because now it's a computerized bill (in you face with the real number) in the past there scratch sheet would say a reduction but you never saw it on bill with the exception for moisture reductions .

The only way i could see taking reductions is if they are paying 20 cents a pound for tin.

Find a new yard. Even traveling 10-20 miles more will make up for it.

I'm with drozenski. You work too hard to get screwed! Yards buy Sheet at such low prices BECAUSE of all the extra crap built into them that would not warrant your time to disassemble the item. Currently at .12 cents a lb here.. I'll be ****ed if I'm going to strip a fridge for 2 hours to make $5 bucks! The good news is if you bail on the yard.. soon others will too- the yard will either come to its senses or go out of business.. in either case I'd say it is a win-win for scrappers in your area!

If you and others continue to go- they will think it is OK to keep on with their "business practices" Best way to stop it- is to not go and give them your hard earned scrap and take it elsewhere!

I just saw this: "moisture reductions" WTF? No way in h-e- double hockey sticks would I ever grace the front gates of any yard who tried to pull that. See now I'm all worked up. This place sounds like a joke.. a VERY BAD JOKE!

Yeah.... the day my yard gives me a "moisture reduction", I'll give them my own moisture reduction right on top of the shred pile! LOL

I have a feeling your yard will add a "air reduction" for the weight of the air inside of your scrap (fridges, dishwashers, washing machines, etc.) They also may add a "Non-ferrous" reduction for all of the non-ferrous that might be inside your shred load. Now how greedy does that sound! If I were you, I would find a new yard if that is an option. There is a reason that it's called "Shred." I feel bad for you man!

im with gravitar, they dont deduct forr the copper wiring and motors in appliances but they do for plastic and insulation, makes no sense to me, find another yard

i would find another yard there is one yard i hate dealing with and have let them known why after sandy they had more metal then they knew what to do with guess what they wish i was there now

cory i like you but i don"t see that in his favor sometimes yards just feel the need to treat EVERYONE like crackheads i deal with 5 yards and refuse to deal with 1 the one i tried to deal with was the closest but they don"t want to play ball.

General consensus seems to be "find another yard". Even if you have to drive farther out to get there. A few years back the yard closest to me, less than 5 miles, started to do some underhanded things. But never a "moisture reduction". Really? That's low.

Anyway, They really, really low-balled us on the prices they paid out. I mean they cut the prices in some cases over half what it used to be. They tried to tell us it was due to some new laws and restrictions placed on them. Only thing was, there were no new laws and restrictions. The yard made it all up. Well, we all stopped going to them. ALL of us. We'd drive 20 miles instead of the 5 and got paid a fair price. This lasted 2 weeks exactly. They almost went under. So, they did an about face, upped their prices and started treating us fairly again. Still took me about 3 months before I went back, but in end they realized they needed us. The scrapper.

But I also gotta say since another yard is not an option, Corys idea ( the donuts ) works wonders!

I have never heard of a scrap yard conducting payouts in this way.

Seems that they should know, since it's their business, how much they can get out of a refrigerator on average, regardless of whatever other materials there happen to be. Armed with this knowledge, they should be able to give you a per lb price, period, without any deductions for individual items or potential items that might be included.

I just posted a video on how e-scrap is processed, if you watch you can see where a dishwasher was thrown onto the conveyer belt. This is generally the way refrigerators and washers are processed.

It just seems to me they are adding fees onto your scrap just like a bank adds fees to your bank account for using your own money. Just another way for them to part you from the real value of the material you worked so hard to bring them.

You are not being petty, you are being smart, and if I were you I would find a different yard to do business with.
