Having a documentary done on my scrap metal business

I was contacted a couple weeks ago by Cory Valentine of Salt Institute, Portland, Maine asking if he could make a documentary of my scrap metal business. In doing his research for the project, he'd found me through this forum, which led him to my website and Face Book page. So far, he's been here three times. The first day, we walked around looking at my "piles" and discussing the process. He took copious notes. The next time, we took a small load to the scrap yard so he could get that experience. Today, he conducted the video interview and took LOTS of pictures and video. We've got another meeting coming up to go back to the scrap yard so he can interview them.

Here's hoping this helps Cory in his future endeavors.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Nice... hopefully it will show people that not all scrappers are meth heads and tweakers.

For Private Messaging other forum members, you need several posts. I forget how many. Anyone help with that? erectronix, if you want, PM me with your questions when you can and I'll be glad to reply. I'm in and out of here all day and really hard to coordinate a time to call.

Yes, there have been changes to the Forum. Mainly to try and confound spammers. But they seem to get trickier all the time.

Well, it's been three months since the last day of filming and I haven't heard anything more. He was supposed to send me a copy of the film - nothing. Pretty disappointed as it was going to be a good part of new advertising. That was the same time as the "partner" who was going to be so good getting junk cars and wound up stealing $200. Oh well, maybe I got it all over at once.

Mick I am sorry for the partnership problems. For you very problem I stay away for anything longer than a one time job type partnership. Even one time jobs seem to bother me.

I think you will find achidemic types run on a different urgency than you so perhaps the documentary may still happen. Mike.

If they pulled the cast from the forums..it surely would be #1 in the ratings.

We got the grumpy, the not grumpy, the brains, the old guy, the young guy, the funny guy, the car guys...ha!

Hilarity would ensue! An I'd watch.

    sorry to be a spoilsport

but i think that it might all not be a good idea
esp if you reveal exactly how much money you earn from the stuff you collect

maybe you should focus more on the hard work part of it
show people that theres a lot of work required before most stuff is fit to take to the scrapyard
otherwise many people will begin to think that instead of giving it to us, they'd rather take it in themselves & pocket the cash.

Money isn't the focus. From watching the film, people get the idea that they will need: A pickup ($30,000); a dual-axle trailer ($3,400); a shop (cabin) for tearing down, processing & storing stuff ($70,000), a tractor with bucket & forks ($21,500); grinder, Sawzall & asst tools ($1000) to haul their $100 worth of stuff to the scrap yard. (These are prices I actually paid for what I use)

Plus it shows the work involved.

I agree with you on that Mick and you know this guy but my concern would be a hack job just to make scrapers look bad. Re-editing can change the entire look of the film. Also if it is a good positive, informative it may nto get aproved for release because of lack of a negitive slant. My nature is not to trust the media and achedemic types in case you couldn't tell.

I hope you get a finished product and we can all see how it comes out but I would not be surprised if it takes a lot longer than a few months. Mike
