catching up and a question about trailers

Hi all, feels like I havent been on here in a while so I wanted let you know what I've been up too. I went to an auction last week and picked up a 01 chevy 2500hd ex. cab 8 ft bed. came with a tool box and pitle hitch only paid 1700! It's been running fine and got it inspected the other day. Also went to do a pick up the other day for a guy who had some wood. turns out it was spring clean out weekend so after talking with him about scrap and giving him my number I set out around the neighbor hood. ended up with a small load of metal before it started to poor rain, not bad considering there was at least 5 other guys out shopping. now that I got my truck and am doing ok with getting scrap I'm thinking about getting a trailer. what do you guys use? the most I've ever brought in at one time was a little more then a ton which most trailers can handle, now here's kinda what I'm looking for, something that has plenty of room and will be able to get the occasional car or truck. I can build my own sides and other customization's but what have you guys found to work best? I've been using my dads trailer which has about 12ft deck space and is 70in between fenders works fine for the most part but not ideal for what I want. I found a 16ft car hauler at a trailer shop near me that I am considering, just looking for some input on my situation.

    Thanks all and happy scrapping

About the only thing I can think of is that a 16' trailer won't be long enough for bigger vehicles, like extended cab pickups and such.

i used to haul cars on a 14 ft tilt bed, when you have the long one, you can cheat sometimes and load it backwards so it hangs over the tounge, just don't turn sharp or it will distroy your truck.

First rule of buying a trailer, longer is better and you'll never know what you'll want to fit on it. A pickup box trailer would be a cheap investment and pay for itself in a couple loads. Be better money spent that a 14 or 12 foot flatbed, in my opinion anyhow.

We use a basic 16 footer...and we have hauled a 91' chevy king cab long wheel base truck on it with all four tires on the trailer. And it has a great resale value when or if you move on to something else. Also if you locate your local manufacturer you can buy it at a huge discount new , Simply ask for it with no decking and no wheels.
you can buy and lay the decking yourself for 1/2 what they charge. You can buy cheap used wheels from any parts yard for WAY less than they charge you for the new ones.

Here locally the purchase price for a 16' trailer frame NEW with paint and hitch is $770.00 Used and beat up and twisted with a floor the resale for around $750

Charles: I don't think you have enough post to send a private message but when you do please send me one. I need some info on where I can get one of those car trailers. I'm going to try sending you a PM.

charles I had no idea you could do that, I will definitely be looking into that. my only concern is weight, when I talked to the guy about it he was saying most have a 7000lbs gvwr but for bigger stuff like trucks you need a 10,000 lbs gvwr

The trailer manufacturer is located in Alamo TN. Hwy 412 S. but I haven't got their number right off hand. As far as weight ...the 16 footer we use has had (for a fact) 8000lbs + sealed lead acid batteries. And a full size extended cab chevy truck will weigh in for scrap at or around 4500lbs (no where near the max 7000lbs) and my trailer has hauled several on it and for reasonable distances , and the trailer is used weekly still with no twists and on a 2x6 floor that is still un-rotted thanks to the oil and fluids smeared on it.

I have a friend named Mathew Felt with the exact same trailer and he pulled in at my yard one day last fall, with a 1 ton ford box truck (dually) on his trailer AND HE WAS PULLING IT WITH A 98' EX-CAB S-10 PICKUP. He wanted to cut the dually rear end out to fix his ford diesel pickup with it.

The trailers will take more punishment than you would think possible , and their easily repairable with a $99 110 volt wire welder from harbor freight or walley world.
