Big screw up at the yard yestereday

called the yard and got an .11 price on 4 000 lbs of server cases no plastic.

we loaded the truck and I also had 400 lbs of Dell desk tops with plastic I decided to load at the front sense we had the room.

I had to go pick up a load of boards so sent wife and kids to the yard with the truck,

forgot to tell the wife to go through the scale and take off the servers then go back through and unload the dells.

    results
    1. we got degraded from .11 to .075 about a 150 dollar difference.

    2. but the real damage was to my reputation, the manager is convinced I tried to hide the dells. even though they were all stacked neatly in the front and all came out in the same on the pile. right on top.

    A. lesson learned: make sure your instructions to the crew are clear and understood.

at least your wife made it to the scale ... my wife would have dropped the kids off at her sisters ---- go shopping - get her nails done - pick the kids up and show up back at home about 15 mins b4 the yard closes with everything still on the truck

You mean to tell me that the scrap yard deductted .035 from 4400 lbs of scrap steel because of a little plastic? Is .072# thiere normal price for shred or is .11 the normal price? That seems like a big hit for some plastic.

^^Thts what I was wondering and I wanted to make sure I was reading the post correctly - that it was the plastic that was the issue.

Not sure if this helps clarify what Olddude was doing but just like the hit you are going to take when you turn in aluminum contaminated with steel (aluminum breakage), steel contaminated with plastic and other fluff is going to take a hit as well, but it's called shred instead of steel breakage. Street price at my yard is .08# right now for shred or as they call it #2 unprepared and for #2 prepared about .10#.

How many tons have you taken to this yard? I can't believe that they would hold this against you. I am sure you have helped make them lots of cash!

thanks KZ, my yard pays a straight price for steel no matter if it has plastic or not but they want stuff cleaned pretty good though.

the only price differences are with the different aluminum classes. Oh, they pay a bit more for rotors though.

Something I'll maybe have to ask them about tomorow's turn in.

Im sure some of our wifes are worse. They would just drive to the shred pile, unload, come home and be like i figured they sent me a check. Giving the yard 4000 pounds of free metal.

Hey olddude did I read somewhere you live in Panama City? I was down there over the weekend and talked to a scrapper on Monday that was loading bed springs, They left cloth and wood on it. I ask him what yard he was using and how much they were deducting for all the cloth and wood. He said he was getting 9 cents a lb and they never deducted anything. He showed me his receipt and sure nuff there was no deductions on. I forgrt the name of the yard but it is over on E 15th near 231

Is it strange or uncommon that at our yard we'd have caught it and weighed them seperately? When our customers make more money, we get more business, simple as that.
