    buying at the yard

so the consence is don't do it. well i did it infront of the owners son, just to make a point (i was having a conversation about ewaste.) guy was bringing in finger crds ram and processors. i quoted him double what the yard pays, (which still leaves me a healthy profit from ewasted) and later in the conversation we walked through the little area that they process ewaste and i was showing him all the $4-5/# gold plated boards that they had misorted into thier mid grade gaylord (they sell mid grade in the $1.50 range.) THERE WAS A CIRIX 686 GOLD CAP PROCESSOR LAYING ON THE GROUND i handed it to him and told him , when you have time look up how much that is worth, (i'm assuming he did since he still talks to me)

there was a 99% chance it would have been swept up and thrown out. i also told him that i need a full time job with benifits min 16 hr. and that it would bring atleast another $50 a hour to thier income stream, he siad he'd think about it. i tried to explain that wth the ewaste the profit is in the processing and upgrading the material, not the selling in bulk, and they are working on it but it's slow to change thier business model. I think i made a impact in thier way of thinking though, as my offer of double what thier paying (i gave him printouts of the offers from the buyers here) still leaves them a larger proft margin, as they normally sell to a broker who sells to a large broker, and the food chain is too long for people taking thier cut and not upgrading the product. so why not top grade the product at the begining of the chain and keep the most profit for yourself? i asked him. the answer was, well we are not set up to do that YET. my response, set me up in that corner with a certified scale/ computer station and for 16 a hr i'll do it for you. i'm still waiting for the official job offer....

its the 8/hr idiots that left that processor on the ground and missorted the boards. the ones outside don't even pull stuff out of the shred pile when they are supposed to. they are already at the poit where the volume is moving through but the profi isn't there because they dont have the emplyes that care (because they are all barely above min wage carnies.)

@ the shred pile there are several bins for them to pull out the nonferr, iron, and other higher grade materials. but they just don't care.

part of our conversation when i siad 16 a hour he replied thats alot more than the other guys here, i replied, i know alot more than the other guys here. "good point" he replied.

I break e-waste down for a yard but the owner does not know who I sell to and never will than he can just cut me out and send it direct. So I break it down ship it off and pay him 50% of the profit which is not bad.

i think the point i was trying to make is that they dont have anyone to break stuff down, process, sort and ship. and i can do all of that, cheeper than they can hire min wage carnies as i'm not wasting loosing or otherwise discarding good scrap. i did offer to break stuff down for a flat rate per, but he wasn't interested in that. they had a pallet of servers there that were wrapped ready to ship, and i broke it down for him what it would cost me in labor to do it for him and the difference in profit he would make on the same material. he seemed interested but at this point they are working on expanding the yard and makng some other major changes so it's in the works but it's not happened yet.
