Runaround at the yard.

I was dropping off some steel at Omnisource today, and while cashing out asked the yard boss what he could pay for computer power supplies. I mentioned that I had around 400lbs, and showed him a stock image of one from Google with my phone. I explained that the majority have wire, but some of the server ones do not. He quoted me .30¢, and I said sounds great, I will be right back with them.

I go home, load them up, and head back out to the yard. I am raking them into a big container when the non-ferrous buyer comes storming over hollering about how the wire can't be mixed with steel, saying I have to cut the wire off. I explain to him that the yard boss just told me he would buy them at .30¢/lb, and the buyer says "I don't give a **** what he says, I am the buyer and I don't have to buy anything." I figured a quick visit to the yard boss would clear it all up, but suddenly he is acting like we talked about the price for just wire. Even though I mentioned what some of the ewaste buyers pay for power supplies, showed him a photo of a power supply, and mentioned that some of them lack wire.



I loaded them back into my truck and went home fuming to unload them all again.

What a waste of time and gas.

i took a power supply with the wires on it to my local yard, and the top off, so they could see what was inside. They weren't at all interested. Unless I locate a suitable buyer within driving distance, Dallas-Ft Worth is the closest metro area, my only option is to grab the easy stuff and toss the rest in with tin

isn't bait and switch usually used to obtain something? as opposed to having them load it twice just to take it home?

Probably didn't think the OP would back out and would let it go for the steel price.

Does sound like a bait and switch too me. Or somebody over stepping there grounds.

First and foremost, Omnisource sucks gigantic (insert here)... I mean in terms of cleaning metal, they require way to much time and effort for me to use them. If you want to get that number for power supplies, throw them in the truck and drive 45 minutes south. I'll get you hooked up pretty well here.

OmniSource is unfortunately my major go-to, and for general sheet metal they are fine. When it comes to various grades of non-ferrous, however, they take great license at breaking balls. As soon as you think you have a decent relationship with one of their bosses or buyers, the shady shiat starts.

If you can do me .25¢ or better on power supplies, I will bring them down in 12 hours. Just tell me where. At this point, as long as OmniSource doesn't get them, IDGAF.

Bloomington Iron and Metal has an ewaste program. They suck for boards, but they pay decently for drives and power supplies. Give them a call tomorrow, (812) 336-6884, and check their prices. I took some in last week and got a good deal. Gold is in the toilet though, so call and ask for Kenny, he's easiest to deal with when it comes to bulk pricing. It might be worth the drive down for sure.
