    unprepared shearable Hmm

    prepared architectural
    unprepared architectural That makes sense

    mix/tin That makes sense

    short steel That makes sense

    unprepared shearable umm what is it ?

    From day one that was the big secret at the yard , not one yard guy talked about it , all that was talked about was short steel or mix/tin , if it was to big it was mix ,THAT was it end of conversation. I used to ask - Can I sell my steel that i am not in the mood to cut cause it is short in type ?? don't you have a in-between type ? NO NO NO we don't

    Well today was it I had plenty of short steel pipes but was 6 foot long I ask can you let me slide this one time ? NO it's mix they said. I said guys this is not Mix it's good stuff.!!



    I grab the price sheet and I see it unprepared shearable I ask what is this ? I ask 3 yard guys ,
    don't know they say to me, go ask front desk people .
    Main guy in charge says it's large mix/tin .
    I ask then why does it pay better then mix/tin ?

    Yup now I hit a nerve -and they see I am not leaving, finally with sincerity another counter person says to me
    IT'S unprepared SHORT

    I say well thats what I have , for $20 less per ton compared to short & $20 more then mix per ton , that sounds fine by me .

    Whats not fine is this .It hit me S**T I have sold tons of unprepared shearable as mix/tin cause this yard is out to scam
    Now it's so clear to me how much they scammed from me,
    I have had loads of short with a few pieces to long .
    They had the nerve to reject it and call it MIX and pay me mix price
    I am so pissed cause now I know the rejection was really based on a few pieces of unprepared shearable , still a decent payer

    unprepared shearable is unprepared short ..... WOW ! , shysters


    Are there size limits for unprepared shearable ?

    Wow what a sorry yard, i had to deal with one like that before, one little piece of tin in a load of short iron and they wanted to give mix. You should spread the word about it to every scrapper you know about what is going on. Put a stop to their scheme if everyone knows about it. And if possible take your business elsewhere.

    ive gotten the run around from a few yards, what it comes down to is they dont want give the info out because it costs them money, thats why people are picky about what yards they use, fortunately there is about 50 yards in the greater kc area that i can go to if one offends me

    i haul clean car bodies from time to time some times i get paid shred and somtimes i get paid prepared, so ive learned over time which yards to take what stuff to

    shysters they are ,teach you they wont , actually they teach you to be like them .
    Now that I know , they will pay me proper for my new organized loads.

    Another mistake I made many a time, wheel rotors they pay $300 a ton
    architectural prepared or unprepared pay well over short I am wondering are the long bolts and electric company
    components a type of architectural steel.
    It's frustrating cause a scrapper finds each piece one by one it don't grow on trees
    there were times i had all rotors and was paid for short !!
    I remember one time I had found I beams these things were 8 feet long so yes they went to short

    I have many save samples of what I considered unique and prime steel
    ,There gonna give me answers and or I will get the truth from a welder friend i know
    Once and for all I'm gonna know my short.

    A boxer when he is pissed says the gloves are off . well I'm a scrapper and the gloves are ON .

    the yards by me have 4 types of ferrous. Short steel, Long steel, Cast iron, and Tin(shred). I guess they are not technically ripping people off, becasue they do not sort the various grades out. It is shipped out as those 4 grades. Most likely not enough volume of the other grades.

    One of the yards that I go to pays the same for all steel. I'm sure they do some basic sorting in the end as I see different grades on my ticket sometimes, but the prices are always the same. Doesn't affect me much though...99% of what I have is shells from electronics and appliances.

    When you bring in as little as 500 lb short on one day and 500 mix on another day
    the short pay out is more by a nice amount - architectural is more then short and
    rotors even more .
    If a yard pays one price for any and all steel thats not dishonest thats there policy,
    but if your yards pays prices based on what you bring in and if by chance you get a load of rotors You would hope the higher ups would pay you proper and not look to see if your confused to what you have wile more experienced scrappers get paid the truth.

    Were all these loads only one type of steel? Or did they say mixed? My yard it is all the same (they say) even though I've been told to put some heavy iron I had mixed into another pile in the yard! I get paid sheet iron / steel for all mine... If I knew that they would pay more I would gladly prepare it the way they wanted. But then again I don't see yard workers pulling much steel out of the pile to re seperate it!

    On the low end type short , and easy find are bed frames , racks from stores . any sort of metal 3/16 thick like shelf brackets . 5 foot by 2 foot is the largest A thousand pounds of short of real high grade takes up not much space in truck.

    My yard has separate piles - mix - short - and now I see shearable . rotors , architectural
    I guess the attitude is let the seller beware .cause as buyers there very aware

    Since the price of metal went down my yard has paid less for sheet metal but I don't separate so on a tip from a worker, he told me to say I had mixed so i got 20 more per ton. However they don't show the weight outside the scale and I miraculously weighed at exactly 1000 pounds one day so things are weird lately since the price drop but they still have the best price in Phx.

    I can't see weight so it's all about trust any way . I find after many trips just the way my truck feels as it sways side to side . I can guesstimate weight I tend to be very close.
    Bottom line if you are the one who hand loads a truck you should with instincts know the weight . also just a visual you can also more or less know you weight,
    so if your truck feels over burdened or you feel excessively tired from loading those are ways to use you instincts if its a real 1000 pounds

We do have short steel which is any and all motors big or small. and right now they are $10.00 a 100 lbs. I am not sure if I would like to deal with a yard like in the OP I like this one real ez just throw every thing in the truck or trailer and go when it comes to steel.

    Yes my yard are game players , as of now $9 per 100 for mix $11 for short and more for even better steels
    .26 for motors = $26 per 100 lb .you need to address you motor situation thats not even close to fair
    unless youi live in a area that motors are falling from the sky . finding motors are work to materialize .10 way to low!!
    you realize motors have copper wiring and true some are AL wire. I would remove the copper from a batch and see if they still want to call your motors short as they still would be with out copper

    My yard is one of those yards where almost all metal is called motors and pays out at 11$/100lb. This includes prepared and unprepared vehicles. The only thing they pay more for is 6' or longer I Beams. I think it like it paying the same. I'd drive myself crazy trying to separate it and maximize my loads.

    After reading all thread answers I was surprised to see how many yards pay one price for all .
    $11 per 100 pounds sounds like that yard tries to pay a average price for all metals that come there way .
    while many scrappers are lucky to have as many as 50 yards at there finger tips many of us don't .

    I have to cat fight for my rights very careful and dignified -- they would just as soon say don't come back if you buck them . Once you make a new discovery , there attitude is OK now you know go for it .It's a new day .

    I once got caught up in a Battle about a yard not paying me for my Aluminum about $ 20 in value after a vigorous exchange of words , I was told NOT to ever come back. All in all we need them more then they need us .

    My yard pays the same for every grade of ferrous metals. They have been as high as $280 per Tom, currently down to $170 per ton.
