New rule about junk vehicles at my yard apparently.

Was at my yard the other day, and saw a tow truck bring in a car. Asked the guy, what kind of work they did. He said, "junk vehicles"....out of curiousity (even though I know the answer), I asked him what do they do with the vehicles, because I see all the signs saying $300+ for a junk vehicle but scrap is no where near that.

Of course he got a ****ty attitude. I knew what they did, but wanted to see what they would say.

Then we got on the verge of titles.

So I talked to the guys in the office, and they told me that all vehicles MUST have a title to accept it. I asked them when did that take place, because almost 2 years ago, I was bring in junk cars all the time doing foreclosures, and we just did a Bill of Sale. They claim that it has always been like that, but I know differently.

Anyway, on Tuesday I am going to call one of the higher ups that I know, and ask her what is going on. I found out the information recently about foreclosure clean outs, and will be pursuing it very soon once I get a few loose ends taken care of, and the junk vehicles that will be coming from the properties have no titles obviously.

The bank, or whoever owns the property have always done the property paperwork with DMV etc, and all I have ever done was a Bill of Sale, and cash in!

Not sure exactly when, within the last year or so, a sign on the window of a local yard here went from "title required on all vehicles after 1992"(i think maybe it was 92) to a sign that now says "title required on ALL vehicles"

My guess is that to many people are stealing them or something. Then they crush them before anyone realizes to check the yards, and then the scrap yards are probably being sued for accepting them.

I have nothing against titles or anything, but when you do foreclosures, there is no titles for the vehicles, so since yards are requiring titles, then you know all the junk vehicle guys are, so that is where I am at with, what the hell am I going to do with the foreclosure vehicles?

The property preservation companies have to going through a process with DMV before being allowed to call/contract anyone to pick up vehicles, boats, rv's, anything registered with DMV. Once that process is done which gives them a right to ownership, they are allowed to do with it, what they please.

Just like if someone leaves a vehicle at my father in law's body shop for 31 days or more, he just has to go to DMV and file some paperwork and then he owns it.

All I have had to do in the past, was do a bill of sale on foreclosure vehicles, and have the individual contracting me, sign the document. Now it seems without a title, everyone is getting screwed.

We actually have a great thread going on in the "Members Section" about this George. Maybe you could tap into some of the Petty Cash from the investment company check it out.

as far as the 300 + it can be done, I do it all the time on volume sales, last week I bought 13 from one wreckerservice for 300 apiece and had to pony up an extra 100 for a chevy 2500 for a total of 4000. you make a little and so do they its a win win

Sorry Bear, didn't mean to insult you. To be honest I never really even pay attention to who is a scrap room member and who's not. I just figure with all of George's listed credentials, he might want to take it into consideration.

A bill of sale don't mean squat when contested in court.
Any Monkey with a crayon and twelve pac wrapper can write a bill of sale and have it notarized but ONLY your state can issue title to a vehicle
Vehicles have one title that matches the VIN , and the name and lien status on that title is the final word until they are changed by the DMV.
Some of us have learned this the hard way some have yet to.
A call to the cops or DMV with a VIN could save a lot of trouble if you are in doubt.
Old dude had a post or two about how much grief this can cause way back if I recall.
This kind of info is no secret and needs to be right up front for all to see

The police in this area will not run a vin for you
and if you should get them to, the most they will tell you is if it is stolen or not

I have had a stolen vehicle in my driveway since October of 2012
Took me 5 months to get the owners name and address

All I'm saying is there are ways of finding out if you have doubts.
I have owned and registered over hundred cars, trucks and motorsickles in the last 40 years and have never once had a cop actually check a VIN plate on any of my rigs and I have been stopped a bunch of times in many states.
They have run my licenses and titles a lot though.
When I did the trade for my 78 Vette I just gave the VIN to my insurance agent's secretary over the phone and she ran it for me in just a few seconds.
    Just like that.

Actually a bill of sale is more than valid, as long as the VIN to the vehicle is on, along with year, make, model, mileage, owners name, address, contact info, how much the sale of the vehicle is/was for, etc.

There are plenty of circumstances when someone might not have a title, especially when dealing with vehicles coming from foreclosures homes. When the lien holders repo the property, everything in it and on it is their property, but for vehicles they must go through a process (never done it personally, but I know there is one) in order for them to have "ownership" and contract me to pick it up.

However, BOS or Original Title isn't the point of discussion. The main thing is, how to dispose of vehicles if the scrap yards will no longer accept BOS.

All the vehicles I have ever scrapped were with BOS's, minus one vehicle.
