First buy of computer components. How'd I do?

    First buy of computer components. How'd I do?

    I've been trying to get with this computer repair shop but he's never been open when I'm there. I introduce myself and ask if he's got somebody getting his junk (he doesn't). Short presentation on what I buy (complete towers, charge for monitors etc). He comes out with a large USPS Flat Rate box full of PCI cards and a few misc electronics and asks what I'll give him for it. Panic - I've never bought components but I'm not about to pass it up and lose a contact. So, I ask if he has any idea what he wants. He says $5 and I figure it has to be worth that. Then he says he's got twice that at his house. It's about 15 minutes away so he's going to bring them to the shop and call me when they're there. Then he asks if I've got any business cards and wants 3 or 4 for other repair guys he knows.

    There is 10.2 pounds of PCI cards and a few other things you can kind of see. What do you think?

    might have been an opportunity to move right in with a per pound price. It would have increased your initial price a bit, but would also have lain the groundwork for future pickups, and encouraged them all to pile it higher ; )

    I would weigh it up, like Bear said set a per lb price. When he calls you back give him the difference for what you have already received from him. That will let him know that you are being honest with him further building his trust in you and possibly getting more business from him and his friends.

    10lbs for 5 bucks..ain't to shabby at current prices..lest in my opinion.

    Like others said I'd offer him a per lb price on the future deals for sure.

    i pay local sellers half the going rate, just pull up a current price sheet and cut the prices in half, i think its fair for them and me

    He has a happy seller as Mick paid the price he was asking.
    It's not always a bad idea to let them set the price, if it's too high then you can always barter.

    That is a nice profit of 32.00 assuming that you get around 4.20 per pound. If I was you I would cut off the fingers then sell the board.

    Very true, but if he would have come in with a price of even $1 per pound and given the guy $10 he would have been even more happy, and much more eager to find more junk to get rid of. I'm all about taking peoples low offers but if it is someone who potentially could keep me supplied regularly i would have paid a bit more to show that calling me would really be worth his while. I'm not knocking Mick, i think it's a GREAT score. I do however agree that next time he should take a scale, sometimes it's really hard to judge the weight on this stuff when you're just looking at a box. A scale ensures you never over pay.

    Someone contacted me from my CL add for electronics and computers. When I got there he asked about a pile of phone cable. We both estimated the weight and I paid him $70 for the wire, 2 computer towers and some items like CRT's that I did not consider in the price. We both thought there was around 150 pounds. I cashed the wire in yesterday, 260 pounds at $1.25.

    the problem with them setting the price is if they find out what the stuff is actually worth they will think you are taking advantage of them big time and you will lose any future business with them, that is why i prefer to always pay 50%, its a karma thing. After overhead and shipping is figured in that leaves 30% profit and that is reasonable.

    I pay $2 pound -$20 pound for boards. With gold going down i have stopped buying off color motherboards and midgrade all together. Right now its green motherboards and up only. If gold goes down more i will probably cut my prices on green mb's and pci cards down to $1 pound and just stockpile till it goes back up

    Thanks, everyone. I really have taken in each point. One big factor is that the guy asked for a price list - which caught me off guard. Then he says he has more at his house AND took several cards to give out to guys he knows. SO, what I'm going to do is get a list written up and take back to him with several copies to hand out with the cards. I think $1 a pound is about right for finger cards so I'll give him $5.20 with the lists and throw in a dollar for the odd items/wire that was with them. Hopefully, that'll be worth some goodwill.

    That is exactly what I would do in this situation Mick. I really believe honestly, good will, and fairness go a long way. Ewasted is a perfect example, every review brags of honesty and goodness, and look at all the repeat business he gets.
