One time I had to ask for help from another scrapper. There were these cast iron fireplace inserts. I had to be there for a half hour until I saw this other scrapper. I flagged him down and they helped me load the heavier one in my truck and I helped them load the lighter one in their truck. Win some, lose some but it was better than nothing.

setting a trap and letting them rear-end you sounds like fun, but police are likely to see through that. some states, such as NY, will give you part of the blame for an abrupt stop. then it becomes he-said/she-said and you can't win pissing contests with skunks. I wouldn't engage them or answer any of their taunts in any way. They want a reaction, because they want a confrontation. These are the same people who used to pick fights on the playground when you were just trying to mind your own business. You both wound up with detention. Same thing now...if you get down on their level, you'll be ticketed right along with them if things deteriorate.

Keep it clean...Just like any other scrap run...slow, careful, and when you are out of the vehicle, eyes down and very respectful.

my suggestion, if you know a local policeman, call them. If you don't, call the police department and just explain what has happened. Tell them you are out picking up stuff from your neighbors and this person is driving at high speeds through residential areas.

next time they tailgate you, pull over, wave them past. If they start harassing you, call the police again. Your previous call will have laid the groundwork.

I do agree with the suggested multiple early runs. If they are indeed that crazy and erratic, they will eventually head elsewhere.

Have to agree about taping her behavior - in fact, just pointing a cell phone or other video device at her and husband will probably get them both to cool down fast. Some people really can't stand a little thing called evidence.

If they don't, then my advice is to get them on tape as many times as you can and store it in your email or somewhere else safe. Otherwise, they can just claim they they happened to be driving behind you as opposed to following you. Multiple times driving behind you would be hard to explain.

I don't know if you have a camera phone- I have AT&T prepaid and I got a camera phone with video for $20 on ebay - I already had a charger but it would maybe be more with one. Definitely worth it - like they say- a picture is worth a thousand words. I've gotten a little obsessive about photographing things since people are so dishonest these days. It's helped me on more than one occasion to have pics. Good luck - by the way they sound like druggies so be careful!

Not syaing you should do this, but way back in my highschool days ran a really hot 50 ford truck. Had a guy always tailgating me when leaving school.
I set-up a kill switch for the brake lights. Kill lights throw on brakes. Flip lights back on and see if they can explain to the police.

When a lightbulb breaks in a car accident.. If its glowing, the broken glass peices get thrown into the filament, because the filaments still hot the glass will melt into the metal filament & stay there.
    Evidence.

On the other hand, who said the tailgaiter isn't accelerating towards you?
On the other hand, its happened to me, some idiot with 'short mans disease' decided to run his car into the rear of mine, the AA said, "Its your fault, if you were not there, he wouldn't have hit you"
    Arrrrrh.

Oh well, didn't damage my car, $1100 damage to his, his insurance paid for his car & the Police gave me a ticket for 'no rego, no warrant of fitness'

That's what they used on me when I was in an accident in Germany even though the other guy was clearly in the wrong. Consulted with the US Army JAG. They told me to pay it and forget it.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Well this lady is still at it. She actually turned around after I passed her on a street and followed me riding my bumper yelling out the window in my home town.

Tonight we saw her again in the next town and she proceeded to turn around and follow me again. this time, after we turned onto the main road she almost t-boned a car turning out of a one lane street. I had stopped to let a car pull out so I could turn down the the lane and the other scrapper FLEW around me in the left turn lane and almost hit the car. Unbelievable.

Tonight, instead of annoying the police with a phone call I emailed the local Chief of police and gave him all the details of what has been happening and asked him what his thoughts are and what he advises.

This has now gone beyond irritating, its getting downright dangerous.

I'm not going to let her intimidate me. I thought about turning around in my seat and snapping her with my phone but given how nutso she is I decided that would probably agitate her even more and cause things to escalate. I then decided to send the email and see what he says/thinks.

back in my troubled youth days I would take two 16 penny nails and twist them together so that no matter how they landed a point was always up. i'm not suggesting you should do this but having a few in the truck and placing them under their tires when they leave the yard so they have two flats to deal with will slow them down...

The best defense is a strong offence. Get their plates and address and do a police report. When you come across lunatics, don't greet them with a smile and call them crazy. Take them serious and take all threats and intimidation seriously. That's my advice.

One last thing, by not doing anything, you are encouraging and enabling this behavior. You are also endangering you and your family. Eventually when you explain to the authorities, they are going to say if you felt threatened why didn't you speak up before? Handle this mess ASAP.

I agree with TheRecycler: This has gone on long enough- too long IMHO.. I think sending info to the chief was great.. but it needs to be nipped in the bud before she hits you or someone else.

I really dont have any of this kind of problem, there's several folks around town scrapping, but heck i either went to school with them, have worked with them. So everyone is on a fairly friendly basis, more of a friendly competition thing. i even get the chance to chit chat with a few of the guys once in a while at the grocery store or gas station.
