This batch is for the newbe with microwaves I don't bother with screw drivers . Hammers or my fav like this wrecking hammer & some clippers .
The side of microwave with fan is the side you want open . Slam the screws and peel the side open pound out the transformer - small fan - cut wires - control buttons are copper bearing - as is the magnetron . Wires- and small motor for glass round tray . MW’s are a decent find .

And while your doing all that slamming and banging watch out for that beryllium. It's either white or pink.
Don't break it or breathe it. Very bad for your health.

And when you're done, you can pack the inside with small stuff and maximize your load. I love getting microwaves, you can strip them down fast after you've done a couple, and they have a good bit of copper in 'em.

I would still use a drill or screwdriver to open and gut them, much safer that way.
NOBODY will buy the magnatrons around hereso I have to throw them away.
dont forget the small motor on the bottom - open the little flap and get that one too

the round magnets on the magnetron do well on ebay, plus the aluminum fins and brass washers on the magnetron come off easily also

That sounds whacked - There copper bearing - find a yard who will take them or box em up sell them on E bayI would still use a drill or screwdriver to open and gut them, much safer that way.

i found half copper half alum on trandformer. i only scraped two. so what part is hazardous?

Look at the pic, it's down on the snout (slender) part, can be a couple of different colors. Usually pink and white are the most common, I'll take that part off and wrap it up and dispose of it.watch out for that beryllium. It's either white or pink.

Some microwave transformers have a Ali winding & a copper winding on the transformer. Normally they are the cheaper ones OR they are the sort of microwave that also has heating elements in it, like a normal oven has.
Theory being that a microwave uses all the power thats getting to it, but if you need some of that power for the elements, it gets taken from the magnatron, so the magnatron is down graded 30 odd percent.
The magnetron also has a very small amount of radioactive substance in it & it will set off the scrap dealers radiation dectectors. Same radioactive stuff as a gas lanterns mantle. Its not going to make you glow in the dark.

it just took me 10 min. to totally strip down one for the yard with a screwdriver.
