Does that mean the steel in the trailers would pay more? Do I have to exclude the axles because of the grease in the hubs? I think it wouldn't be worth it for me to save all of it up and take it at once, separately. By the time I get down to the frame I'm ready to get a full load of whatever I have going.

Most of my labor is tied up in filling, hauling and unloading my trailer at that burn pile. If I can get the foundation to approve the cost of a debris box and set it at the demo site, things would go faster and cleaner. At least I tried.

Wow what a great documentation of this project! Nice job!
If it were me I would have the foundation buy you a cutting torch set. Northern Tool sells them for $129.00.
They don't come with tanks but they can be found on Craig's list pretty cheap.
You are doing them a huge favor, why should all the fuel and tool costs be put on you?
That is a lot of labor and expense on your part, a torch set would make life easy for you!
Good luck and again a fine job!

I agree with Kris Kringle. I've been offered several trailers and turned them all down.
People may laugh at me, but that's ok. I laugh all the way to the bank.

Thanks for the comments guys. We were thinking about picking up a trailer I've had my eye on and making a go of scrapping over the summer. We live about 2 hours north of Atlanta so there would be plenty of auto shops to approach for rotors and engine blocks down there.

    1. Do you think my wife and I could make a grand or more a month scrapping in rural North Georgia?

    2. If I set up a website and posted on craigslist do customers go online looking for services?

    3. What would you recommend to get business or what should we watch out for?

If you can get your advertising out there and get a nice reputation amongst the residence and they help spread the word of mouth, you could make decent money. Some people do go on Craigslist to find somebody taking scrap, but alot of times the posts are flagged and removed.

    1. If you plan on scrapping full time and you do it right, you could probably make 5k per month. Even if you plan on scrapping part time, you can still make 1k a month easy. It depends on how dedicated you are to it. You get out what you put in.

    2. This will get you some business, but I wouldn't recommend it as your only way of advertising. Call local companies that deal with metal, put an ad in the paper, etc. From what I hear, scrap metal is pretty common in rural areas.

    3. I wouldn't expect much from the Atlanta area. Scrappers are everywhere in big cities and I'd bet every last company is already spoken for. I may be wrong, but that's usually how it is.

Keep us updated on the trailers. It's been awhile since we've heard any news.

Yea, I haven't been posting, but things are still moving forward scrapping the trailers. We went after one that was down a hill and cleaned up some other areas around the property.

I went ahead and created a blog for future updates. I invite everyone here to keep up with the project and comment with your ideas. They really do help a lot.

The link in my signature goes to the rest of the updates. Thanks

Thanks for the heads up on that. Yea, I busted a hole in it to run the chain through. I have a lot to learn still.

4 down 2 to go Shooting for completion by the end of April

A quick update from the project we've been on since January 4th 2011.

We now have a track hoe operator helping us once we've stripped what we can from the shell. I have also begun to pick up tree work with a guy I met about a week ago. This is helping out tremendously.

Here is a video update from the blog.

Oh, btw, we are building a treehouse too.

Looks like you're making out pretty good.

On those dishes (and other household appliances, clothes etc) - consider boxing them up and taking them to Goodwill. Get a receipt and take credit for charitable contribution on your taxes. Works well for me. Doesn't cost me anything when I get stuff from a house clean-out.

I've hauled four loads - 2820 pounds of Light Iron and 4900 pounds of #1 Iron. Took some pictures to post, but keep getting message that they're to big even though they're the same as the others. Doesn't look like I made much of a dent in the pile. Snowed another 10" last week and now melting with rain so it's just too muddy to work over there. I hope by next week...
