I have GOT to sit down and figure out how to redo this bench in a way that works for me!

Did You git one figured out.. Was thinking but again.. if You drop a bit or sumthing it gonna be a pain to get it out.. but may work..

Build your bench flat... like I did.. put a access panel from the side to the other side but build a frame box on the bottom side of the table.. and then make yourself a tounge and groove slot in that box frame you builted. then what You can do.. is you would need a broom that would be so wide that will be able to fit in between the two by fours and push your screws and such into the drop box and then pull the board out of the tounge n groove for the screws to fall into a bin the width of the table. but before you put your mesh on top.. put several two by fours at the dead end of the able.. drill holes into them that would allow a push broom stick to be scrwed into.. and again when ready to you can slide your broom handle in.. turn it in.. and then pull the screws toward the drop down area for the opening on the bottom of the table.. think that would work better Might have to do that.. next time I do a clean out.
